Anime can tackle any type of story or genre, but there is no shortage of series where characters wield diverse superpowers. There’s some surprising variety between the many superpowers on display in anime. However, a common power that several series explore is the advent of plant-manipulation skills.
It’s easy to be impressed by the flashy nature of fire, water, or electricity-based elemental powers. A mastery over nature can be extremely advantageous given the right circumstances. Plant-based powers can still be expressed in a multitude of ways and there is a wide range of anime, from One Piece to Jujutsu Kaisen, that make effective use of plant abilities.
10 Ibara Shiozaki
My Hero Academia
My Hero Academia embraces the current superhero trend with dozens of characters – heroes and villains alike – that wield unique superpowers known as Quirks. Ibara Shiozaki is one of the more dedicated students in U.A. High’s Class 1-B and she benefits from the advantageous Vine Quirk. This ability allows Shiozaki to adeptly manipulate the hair-like vines that grow from her head so that her body is the ultimate weapon.
Shiozaki’s vines can be used to attack targets, facilitate transportation, or help shield Shiozaki from danger. Shiozaki is slightly restricted by how the nature of her Quirk applies to just the vines on her body, but she’s still able to accomplish incredible things on and off the battlefield.
9 Kurama
Yu Yu Hakusho
Yu Yu Hakusho is a standout battle shonen series from the ’90s that’s aged well thanks to its succinct length. Yusuke Urameshi is Yu Yu Hakusho‘s strongest fighter, but the anime works hard to highlight how Kurama, Hiei, and Kuwabara have equally important abilities. Kurama has plant manipulation skills at his disposal where he’s able to use his demon energy to influence nature in impressive ways.
Kurama tends to fight with an intimidating vine whip that’s indicative of his ability to turn average nature into deadly weapons. However, Kurama can also grow carnivorous plants that aid him in battle as well as medicinal herbs that are able to heal wounds or cure poisons.
8 Toshiki Minegishi

100-m7w9rxzq” title=”mob psycho 100“>100-myolz42o” title=”mob psycho 100“>Mob Psycho 100 is set in a heightened world that’s full of dangerous psychic espers. Shigeo “Mob” Kageyama is the deadliest esper, but this meek teenager opts for a peaceful life rather than one that’s ruled by emotional outbursts and psychic violence. Mob faces eclectic espers on his adventures and Toshiki Minegishi is specifically skilled in “chlorokinesis,” the manipulation and control of nature and plant life.
Minegishi previously used this deadly skill for the terrorist organization, Claw, where he causes extreme chaos. Minegishi can make plants rapidly grow at will and also control their movements. Minegishi’s chlorokinesis results in vicious Venus flytrap obstacles and attempts to overrun the city with a jungle of destructive flora.
7 Usopp
One Piece
Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is still going strong after more than 1000 episodes and Monkey D. Luffy has made some unforgettable friends during his many adventures through the Grand Line and beyond. Usopp is a resilient fighter and strategist who gains a valuable skill in the Pop Greens after two years of dedicated training under Heracles.
Pop Greens are the seeds of hostile plants that grow to full maturity in seconds, which trigger a multitude of effects. Usopp has seemingly infinite Pop Green abilities at his disposal, all of which highlight the power of plants in highly unusual ways.
6 Hanami
Jujutsu Kaisen
Jujutsu Kaisen’s second season is guaranteed to reach greater heights than ever after Jujutsu Kaisen 0‘s success. Jujutsu Kaisen’s diverse curses all manage to be uniquely terrifying. Hanami works alongside Jogo, Dagon, and Mahito, but there’s extra weight to his aggression since he’s a curse that’s the result of land-based natural disasters.
Hanami resents humanity for how they’ve neglected nature, which results in some exceptional battles. Hanami has all of the standard curse perks, but he can also create and destroy plants and roots at will. Hanami’s Cursed Bud technique leeches life off of those it encounters and his colorful Flower Field maneuver erases warriors’ fighting instinct through nature’s beauty.
5 King
The Seven Deadly Sins
In The Seven Deadly Sins, King’s “Disaster” ability doesn’t specifically apply to plants and nature, but rather a grander control over life and death itself within the Fairy Realm. King can employ this skill completely independent of plants, but there are many occasions where he manipulates elements of nature to forge formidable weapons.
For instance, King can concentrate errant moisture from a tree branch into a fatal bullet that he can control. King typically manipulates flora through his Disaster skill, which can also be used to remove life from nature and cause a whole forest to wither and die at a moment’s notice. It’s a power that’s far more useful than merely the growth and manipulation of plants.
4 The Wood
Cardcaptor Sakura
Cardcaptor Sakura is a pivotal magical girl shojo series that tells an engaging serialized story alongside engaging “monster of the week” adventures. The Wood is an early Clow Card from the series, yet still one of Cardcaptor’s most interesting cards. The Wood takes the form of a nymph-like spritely woman who is timid, but dangerous.
The Wood can manipulate plants and Cardcaptor Sakura doesn’t really go off the beaten path when it comes to its representation of plant powers. Nevertheless, The Wood is a memorable Cardcaptor Sakura encounter and a skill that Sakura turns to often for help.
3 Sugino & Haru
Zatch Bell
Zatch Bell! is a modern shonen classic that tells a suspenseful story that caters towards magical combat. Zatch Bell and Kiyo Takamine are partnered together to participate in a legendary tournament with dire stakes. Sugino and Haru are one of Zatch and Kiyo’s first major battles and the strategy that they build during this encounter fuels all of their subsequent fights.
Sugino and Haru challenge Zatch and Kiyo at the Botanical Gardens, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that plant manipulation is their specialty. Sugino and Haru properly take advantage of their environment and prove how dangerous plants can be, but they’re still no match for Zatch and Kiyo as humble beginners.
2 Igor Planter
Black Cat
Black Cat is an entertaining twist on the assassin action series. Train Heartnet, a renowned executioner, turns his skills to bounty hunting. Black Cat‘s world is in chaotic disarray as both an arms race and Tao magic keep a nation in fear. Igor Planter has an apt Tao ability where he can create and manipulate plants to do his bidding.
Monstrous vines and natural structures are crafted through Igor’s Tao, but Black Cat also explores plant powers in a more creative fashion, like their use of mood-changing pheromones and pollen. Igor can also transform himself into a Swamp Thing-esque plant-man hybrid when the situation calls for such a tactic.
1 Mimosa Vermillion
Black Clover
Black Clover is set in a fantastical world where different factions are aided by eclectic styles of magic that are tied to different grimoires. Mimosa Vermillion quickly stands out in House Vermillion and rises the ranks of the Royal Knights through her powerful plant magic abilities. Mimosa’s plant magic is initially used for defensive measures.
However, Mimosa’s evolving skills lead to plant magic also becoming a valuable offensive tool in battle. Mimosa’s Magic Cannon Flower delivers a deadly blast of concentrated mana, for instance. Mimosa develops valuable healing properties through her plant magic, which she even adapts into protective magical garb that’s far superior to any shield or suit of armor
