As a standard need to live, eating is something that is commonly overlooked in anime and other forms of media. It is usually excluded from the show unless it is detrimental to a character’s situation, growth, and/or personality, such as Luffy from One Piece, Gluttony from the Fullmetal Alchemist franchise, or even Denji from Chainsaw Man.
However, there are prominent characters within anime that fans have yet to see eat outside of fan fiction and fan art. Some will never be seen eating due to the character’s death or their lack of need to eat due to what they are.
1 Twice (My Hero Academia)
Jin Bubaigawara, or Twice, was a member of the League of Villains in My Hero Academia that is usually masked while on screen. Viewers only see him demasked when it is destroyed in a fight, or in the flashback that explained his contradictory personality.
Because Twice rarely exposes his real face, there isn’t really a chance to see him eat. Most of his calm moments include him being witty, silly, or observant of the situation and providing his input, not consuming food.
2 Rachel “Ray” Gardner (Angels Of Death)
In the entire anime of Angels of Death, only Zack is shown eating food and that is only in his flashback from when he was a kid. Rachel however, even as the protagonist of the anime, is never shown even eating a bite of food.
Throughout the show, food isn’t much of a topic as getting out of the institution they are in alive. Even in her flashback with her parents, she didn’t eat while they were arguing. Viewers only know she is well-fed as she doesn’t mention being hungry nor does the telltale rumbling stomach that Zack had in his flashback.
3 Alphonse Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist)
For the majority of the Fullmetal Alchemist franchise, Alphonse Elric doesn’t even have a physical body to eat with. It was mentioned a few times that as he was a growing boy he needed to eat, but that was while he was sealed inside his armor.
It would be thought that once Al got his real body back that one of the first big scenes fans would see of him would be him eating a full-course meal with his brother. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case as viewers are only informed that he is getting fed as he starts to get his physical strength up.
4 Nezuko Kamado (Demon Slayer)
As a demon in Demon Slayer, Nezuko is a being that usually feeds on humans to survive. However, because of both her muzzle and her will to not eat others, she hasn’t eaten anything since the day she was turned into a demon.
It was determined from early on in the series that Nezuko can build up her strength and power by sleeping rather than how normal demons do. She also uses sleeping to heal herself so that she won’t have to hurt the humans she cares for.
5 Henry Henderson (Spy X Family)
Henry Henderson, Anya’s teacher in Spy x Family, is a man of elegance that strives to lead his students down the right path. While fans have seen his students eat, not just Anya and her family, he has not been seen eating with them nor on his own.
Most experiences viewers have of the older gentleman is that of where he is defending those who have exhibited good qualities, particularly that of elegance. As he exercises that his students show the most elegance, it seems that there isn’t much of a focus on him getting the energy he needs to make them do so.
6 Fire Lord Ozai (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
As the main villain of the Avatar: The Last Airbender Series, Fire Lord Ozai doesn’t get as much screen time as some might think. With his face only being relieved at the start of the third season, fans of the franchise don’t get a chance of seeing him eat, even with Zuko and Azula.
Out of the Fire Nation royal family, only the two children are seen consuming food, especially Zuko as he makes his journey of self-redemption with his Uncle. Ozia, however, despite being the self-proclaimed Phoenix King, is never seen eating so much as bread.
7 Leo (Fairy Tail)
When it comes to the celestial spirits of Fairy Tail, they are never seen eating anything, rather they will just join in on the drinking and the celebrations they partake in. Leo, also known as Loke/Loki, was never seen eating as well, despite being in the guild for years and even when he was pretending to be a human.
Any experience Leo has around food usually consists of him drinking and not eating anything. Otherwise, he is fighting his battles as Lucy’s celestial spirit, more than likely getting any sustenance he needs in the celestial realm.
8 Elizabeth Midford (Black Butler)
Even though the world of Black Butler is set in Victorian England, where the main protagonist is a wealthy individual, fans have yet to see Ciel’s betrothed eat a single bite of food. Elizabeth is usually just around to talk to Ciel or talk about him, very well playing her part as a loyal future wife for the young lord.
Even at an event where there was plenty food near her, viewers don’t see her eat any of it. Before she is even seen eating, fans get to see her fight to protect her beloved, which in her situation, is noble, but quite odd if trying to be a lady.
9 Erwin Smith (Attack On Titan)
Before his death, Attack on Titan‘s former commander Erwin Smith was a man dedicated to the cause of furthering the will of humanity. With his will to make sure humanity survived, Erwin put aside his own well-being by fighting Titans and staging a coup to create a better government.
Considering how time-consuming all his duties are, Erwin doesn’t have much time to eat. When he does, he eats outside the scenes he is shown in. With little time to rest, he spends it trying to aid humanity or recuperating from losing his arm.
10 Shion (That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime)
From the first time fans saw her, Shion has had a knack for making her food look inedible, and before her second upgrade, it was inedible. It was bad enough that Rimuru made eating her food into a punishment for his people, as seen with Gabiru earlier on.
Though her cooking gets better despite still looking disgusting, Shion is never seen eating anything. Not even to taste the food she makes. This makes things all the more worrisome as she is passionate about her cooking, even when it looks like it is still alive.
