What is Alice in Borderland?
Season 1 of Alice in Borderland premiered in December 2020. The story follows Arisu, a young man who wastes his life away at home playing video games. He and his best friends, Chōta and Karube, run away from the police and hide in the bathroom, only to find Tokyo completely abandoned when they emerge. They realize they’ve become unwitting visitors to the Borderland where they must play for their lives in a series of deadly games. Season 1 received positive praise for its cinematography and acting performances from Kento Yamazaki, who plays Arisu, and Tao Tsuchiya, who plays Usagi.
Season 2 takes place after Arisu and his friends beat and survive the first round of games. They must now battle against the citizens of the Borderland. The difficulty and stakes are raised exponentially because the Kings, Queens and Jacks have all lived in the Borderland for some time, and they know how to win the games. If Arisu and his friends manage to beat the Face Card games, Arisu may finally find the answers to the questions he’s been holding: what is the Borderland, and why are they here?
Written and illustrated by Haro Aso, Alice in Borderland began serialization in Shōnen Sunday S from November 2010 to March 2015 before transitioning to Weekly Shōnen Sunday and ending in March 2016. A spin-off series with Aso and illustrator Takayoshi Kuroda called Alice on Border Road, which ran from August 2015 to February 2018, revolved around a female high school student who must play in deadly survival games. A direct sequel to the first series called Alice in Borderland: Retry throws Arisu back into the Borderland with a new set of dangerous games and new players.
Season 2 of Alice in Borderland is currently streaming on Netflix.
