One Piece: Every Member Of The Worst Generation, Ranked By Design

Highlights

  • The Worst Generation’s designs in One Piece reflect their personalities and uniqueness, making them instantly recognizable.
  • Some characters, like Killer and Basil Hawkins, could have had more additions to their designs to better represent their abilities and natures.
  • Characters such as Zoro, Law, and Eustass Kid have distinctive features that make them stand out and convey their personalities effectively.

The Worst Generation, a band of pirates in the world of One Piece, is perceived as the most significant threat to the established order by the World Government. While they are primarily renowned for their distinctive abilities and personal talents, their striking designs serve as another compelling aspect that sets them apart. These designs are a reflection of their individual personalities.

Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, has consistently demonstrated his talent for crafting vivid and easily identifiable characters based on their appearances. However, it is evident that when it comes to the Worst Generation, Oda has gone the extra mile in the realm of visual storytelling. It’s worth noting that their post-timeskip designs, which tend to be more expressive, likely align with Oda’s original vision for these characters.

12 Killer

Killer’s Mask & Blades Give Him A Menacing Look

  • Post-Timeskip First Appearance: Episode 603

Killer undeniably possesses a rather intimidating appearance, primarily due to the mask concealing his entire face. This mask was only unveiled relatively recently in the story, adding an element of mystery to his character. Additionally, the spinning blades affixed to his arms serve as a standout and distinctive feature.

However, beyond these characteristics, there isn’t much more to dissect in Killer’s design. He frequently opts for straightforward attire, typically donning basic shirts and pants.

One notable aspect of his appearance is his long, flowing golden hair. At one point, this feature led to fan theories suggesting a potential connection to Sanji, the Straw Hat crew member. Regrettably, this intriguing possibility never materialized in the story.

11 Basil Hawkins

The Long Flowing Hair & Marks On His Face Are Intriguing

images/news/2023/11/6/one-piece-worst-generation-best-designs_2.jpg
  • Post-Timeskip First Appearance: Episode 603

Considering Basil Hawkins’ truly unique character, particularly his exceptional ability to predict the future using tarot cards, there is potential for a few more design elements that could have emphasized his almost mystical nature. While he does have the three black triangle symbols just above his eyes and a cross at his throat, some additional markings could have further enhanced the portrayal of a man who harbors knowledge beyond what he reveals.

Nonetheless, Hawkins’ distinct style, characterized by ruffled shirts and his flowing, waist-length hair, makes him instantly recognizable. However, it’s conceivable that Oda could have pushed the boundaries of his appearance even further to fully encapsulate his enigmatic persona if he had chosen to do so.

10 Jewelry Bonney

Has A Style That’s Recognizable & Fashionable

images/news/2023/11/6/one-piece-worst-generation-best-designs_3.jpg
  • Post-Timeskip First Appearance: Episode 629

Bonney remained notably absent from the story for an extended period before gradually reemerging in the narrative, starting from the Reverie Arc. As a result, fans have had the opportunity to see more of her character since then. She boasts a rather stylish appearance, often donning a brown fur jacket and a green cap that conceals her long pink hair.

A charming detail of her design is the tiny lipstick marks placed above and below her mouth, forming the shape of a heart, adding a delightful touch to her look. Although her post-timeskip appearance marked an improvement over her relatively plain pre-timeskip design, it’s fair to say that Bonney’s overall design may not be as captivating when compared to some of the other members of the Worst Generation.

9 X Drake

His Sleek Coat & X Markings Give The Impression Of A Grizzled Warrior

images/news/2023/11/6/one-piece-worst-generation-best-designs_4.jpg
  • Post-Timeskip First Appearance: Episode 736

Drake’s true intentions are unveiled later in the storyline, but during his early appearances as a pirate, his attire set him apart from the rest of the crew. His formal dress, featuring a long trench coat, two hilted swords, and a prominent X emblem across his chest, gave him an imposing and distinctive appearance. Eiichiro Oda’s choice to create a “pirate” character with a more soldier-like appearance served as clever foreshadowing of events to come.

Drake’s design is undeniably memorable, particularly due to the X symbols on his chest and chin. However, he lacks distinctive features that would elevate his overall appearance. Nevertheless, the rare occasions when fans get to witness his full Allosaurus form undeniably showcase his cool and impressive design.

8 Zoro

The Scars Across His Body & Face Make Him Stand Out

images/news/2023/11/6/one-piece-worst-generation-best-designs_5.jpg
  • Post-Timeskip First Appearance: Episode 518

As the series progresses, Zoro gradually adopts elements of the samurai dress code, often donning a loose robe that remains wide open, revealing the scar that stretches across his chest. His trio of swords is consistently secured to his hip, bestowing upon him a stern and formidable countenance that is sure to instill fear in the eyes of any adversaries who dare to challenge him.

The most prominent and striking detail, without a doubt, is the scar that conceals Zoro’s left eye. This scar has been the subject of fan theories and speculation for many years. While Zoro may not possess the flamboyance or vividness of some other characters, Oda has undeniably succeeded in crafting a design that exudes an overwhelming sense of power and strength.

7 Trafalgar D. Law

Never Leaves The House Without His Trusty Black & White Cap

images/news/2023/11/6/one-piece-worst-generation-best-designs_6.jpg
  • Post-Timeskip First Appearance: Episode 584

Law’s choice of attire has undergone several transformations over the course of the story, but certain iconic elements consistently define his character. One of these is his distinctive white and black spotted winter hat, a recurring feature in his ensemble, even when he finds himself in warmer climates. This hat contributes to his casual and carefree appearance, perfectly aligning with his laid-back personality.

What’s even more telling about Law is his almost constant incorporation of the Heart Pirates’ symbol into his clothing, underscoring the deep affection he holds for Bepo and the rest of his crew. Keen-eyed fans can also discern the tattoos on Law’s fingers, which become particularly conspicuous when he harnesses the power of his Devil Fruit.

6 Urouge

The Most Recognizable Grin In The Series

images/news/2023/11/6/one-piece-worst-generation-best-designs_7.jpg
  • Post-Timeskip First Appearance: One Piece Stampede

The “Mad Monk” boasts a truly captivating design, and it’s not solely due to the intricate tattoos that adorn his body. The most striking element of his appearance is undeniably the wings attached to his back, which have ignited a multitude of fan theories. However, the standout feature of his overall look is that colossal smile. In nearly every scene, Urouge is seen sporting a grin, which, given his reputation for immense power as learned from other characters, suggests that this might be his way of anticipating the moment when he can unleash his might.

This simple yet powerful characteristic significantly contributes to the development of his character, shrouding his true intentions in mystery. Furthermore, Urouge’s towering stature allows him to loom over anyone who comes close. Fans eagerly await Oda’s potential additions to his design in future appearances, but one can only hope that he maintains that immense grin, which has become emblematic of his character.

5 Eustass Kid

Fiery Red Hair & Metal Arm Represents His Maliciousness

images/news/2023/11/6/one-piece-worst-generation-best-designs_8.jpg
  • Post-Timeskip First Appearance: Episode 603

Eustass Kid is renowned as the most malicious and violent member of the Worst Generation, and Eiichiro Oda masterfully captures this in his appearance. His fiery red, spiky hair and perpetual donning of dark motorcycle boots contribute to a punkish aesthetic that perfectly mirrors his aggressive personality. Furthermore, the imposing giant metal arm he possesses adds an extra layer of danger to his overall look.

Following the timeskip, the addition of scars to Kid’s body has transformed his appearance into that of a seasoned and battle-hardened warrior. This visual element is a brilliant form of storytelling, enhancing his character development. While he may not be the most stylish among his peers, Eustass Kid undeniably boasts a memorable and distinctive appearance that sets him apart from anyone else in the series.

4 Luffy

The Wide Eyes & Straw Hat Grant Him The Look Of An Adventurer

images/news/2023/11/6/one-piece-worst-generation-best-designs_9.jpg
  • Post-Timeskip First Appearance: Episode 518

Fans are pretty accustomed to Luffy’s appearance after having seen him for hundreds of episodes, but this makes it easy to forget just how captivating the little guy’s design is. The wide eyes, open shirt, and of course, the straw hat, which is permanently resting on his head, give the impression of a plucky adventurer who wants nothing more than to explore the world.

What’s especially great about Luffy’s post-timeskip design is the addition of the X mark on his chest left by Akainu. Behind all the laughs and funny faces, this simple scar shows just how much Luffy has been through, and is a constant reminder of the heartbreak he experienced from losing Ace.

3 Capone Bege

Oozes Style & Luxury With Gold Rings, Trenchcoat, and Cigar

images/news/2023/11/6/one-piece-worst-generation-best-designs_10.jpg
  • Post-Timeskip First Appearance: Episode 736

Capone’s gangster-inspired trench coat and top hat almost make him look like a character ripped right out of a different series, but it’s this level of style and fashion sense that makes him so recognizable and different. The golden rings, clean beard, and cigar hanging from his mouth are all very reminiscent of characters in classic gangster movies who try to look threatening without going over the top in their dress code.

This is the same with Capone who is always sporting the most luxurious clothing, no matter what the occasion, which hides his true intentions and powers. It’s an extremely unique design choice by Oda that no other character would be able to pull off without looking ridiculous.

2 Blackbeard

Sports Exaggerated, Colorful Outfits & A Long, Dark Sectioned Beard

images/news/2023/11/6/one-piece-worst-generation-best-designs_11.jpg
  • Post-Timeskip First Appearance: Episode 917

Blackbeard is probably the most “pirate” looking character in the entire series, especially with his missing teeth and pistols tucked into his belt, but while he looked amazing before the time-skip, Oda went the extra mile with his design after the two-year break. Now, Blackbeard sports a fancy fur coat along with a gigantic beard that has been split into sections, just like his inspiration.

He even wears polka-dot pants and a feathered cap, which is a great design choice to demonstrate the carefree nature of a man who has already become absurdly powerful in the One Piece universe. While fans haven’t gotten to see Blackbeard in action too much since the time skip, the glimpses they have been treated to prove that Oda is getting extremely creative with the character’s style and fashion sense this time around.

1 Scratchmen Apoo

The Vibrant & Colorful Aesthetic Perfectly Encapsulates His Personality

images/news/2023/11/6/one-piece-worst-generation-best-designs_12.jpg
  • Post-Timeskip First Appearance: Episode 603

Scratchmen Apoo is usually considered to be the clumsiest and most aloof member of the Worst Generation, but what he lacks in strength, he more than makes up for in his design. Apoo’s undying love for music shows in how he looks, not only with his black headphones and shaded sunglasses but also with his teeth, which are black and white to look like piano keys.

It’s the vibrant nature of Apoo that truly makes him a feast for the eyes since no matter where fans look, there will always be something to spot in his appearance. Whether it’s his ornamental robes which are always extremely colorful to showcase his upbeat personality, or even just his extremely long arms that are in reference to his origins, he undoubtedly has one of the most captivating designs in all of One Piece.
