Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam was a box office disappointment upon its release last year. However, the DCEU movie dominated its contemporaries on its new home —Netflix — after it landed on the streaming platform.

Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson, generated a buzz among DC fans. They were excited that, finally, Johnson would claim his throne as one of the greatest action heroes in Hollywood. To the dismay of many, the $195 million anti-hero film didn’t perform well at the box office. Black Adam‘s box office total only reached $387 million after seven weeks, which was underwhelming for both DC and Johnson. However, the tide had changed, as Black Adam redeemed its reputation after landing on Netflix.

Netflix released a list of the films in the Top 10 from December 4 to December 10. Black Adam is on the eighth spot, and it has been there for a week, along with other DC films, which also landed on Netflix, like Suicide Squad and DC League of Super-Pets. Several DCEU films landed on Netflix earlier this month. Aside from the three that made it to the top 10, DC fans can now watch Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Birds of Prey, Shazam, and Wonder Woman 1984 on the streaming platform. Robert Pattinson’s The Batman is also available on Netflix.

The affinity for DC films seems to have been revitalized because several netizens expressed interest in watching Black Adam and the other superhero films from DC after learning that they are already accessible on Netflix. One user said they watched Black Adam and found it “really good,” so he wasn’t sure why people disliked it. A different user compared the film to a fine wine, which tastes better as it ages. Another fan said they had watched Johnson’s titular superhero flick many times and would do so again after it landed on Netflix. “Black Adam, the best superhero movie since its release, is on Netflix,” another netizen wrote.

There is no doubt that Black Adam has found success on Netflix. It seemed that it was able to redeem its reputation after Black Adam fell short at the box office last year. Black Adam fared poorly because the expectations were too high, knowing that Johnson was playing the titular character, and it didn’t deliver. It lacked a concrete backstory to capture the audience’s attention, had mediocre cinematography, the CGI was boring, and some action sequences were not convincing. Even solid DC fans were not impressed with Black Adam. Many were hopeful it would be at least as good as Shazam, but it wasn’t.

The characters featured in Black Adam were also overwhelming. There were too many faces, and the audience felt they were thrown with the entire Justice Society and expected to understand who they were. Unfortunately, there was a severe lack of character-building, and many of those characters appeared insignificant. In the end, the audience felt that the film was extremely rushed. But then again, to each their own. While many were not impressed with Black Adam when it hit the theaters, it seemed that more and more were in the mood for a superhero genre this time. Those who watched the film on Netflix appeared kinder and more supportive of the film. Maybe this is Black Adam‘s time to shine. Perhaps it’s finally on the perfect platform where it is meant to be — where it is appreciated.
