EXCLUSIVE: Robotech Debuts First Issue Cover and Minmei Character Design Art

Titan Comics has unveiled brand-new artwork as it prepares to roll out its epic new series Robotech: Rick Hunter.

The exclusive images include a pull page from the first issue, as well as the issue’s cover and a design for fan-favorite character Lynn Minmei. Power Rangers’ artist Simone Ragazzoni illustrated all three works and will helm the series alongside Transformers writer Brandon Easton. While the cover and character design are not final art and remain a work in progress, they provide an exciting taste of what fans have to look forward to from Rick Hunter. The latest saga in Titan’s adaptation of the beloved 80’s anime will pick up where its previous series, The Macross Saga, left off and will continue the story past the events of the original animated series’ continuity for the first time in the franchise’s history.

Titan began their Robotech adventure in 2017 by adapting The Macross Saga, the storyline that served as the basis for the 1985 animated series’ first season. Robotech centers on humanity’s discovery of alien technologies after a spaceship crash lands on Earth, a blessing and a curse that gives humans incredible military power but leads them into multiple wars against extraterrestrials. Rick Hunter, the subject of Titan’s new series, is a central character throughout these wars – an accomplished pilot and commander. This upcoming saga will reportedly follow Rick as he faces new interplanetary threats and encounters new enemies while also reflecting on the moments that shaped his life as he encounters old friends, offering a fresh look at one of the franchise’s most significant characters.

The History of Robotech

Robotech was part of the early wave of mecha series that popularized the medium in America, alongside series like Transformers and Mobile Suit Gundam. The Japanese anime Super Dimension Fortress Macross, created by Shoji Kawamori, inspired the show’s American adaptation. News broke of a live-action adaptation in 2007 but experienced delays due to legal battles between American and Japanese producers. Production settled the legal issues in 2021. Hawkeye’s Rhys Thomas was announced as the director of the upcoming live-action film, which does not have a release window as of yet.

However, Issue #1 of Robotech: Rick Hunter certainly does and is set to release on August 2, 2023. It is now available for pre-order.
