The Lord Of The Rings series is filled with tons of fascinating groups for fans to learn about. While some may simply prefer to learn more about the Dwarves, Men, or Elves generally, it is possible to dive even deeper into unique groups within each of those races. For many, the Elves of Lord Of The Rings provide the most look into the creative fantasy world. With groups like the Teleri, Nandor, and even Sindar to look into, fans of Elves may find themselves interested in one particular group featured in the film series, the Galadhrim.
With Elves being some of the noblest and most in tune with nature beings in Middle Earth, having a single group most often associated with battle may seem odd. Far from simply being a group fit for battle, as shown in the Lord Of The Rings films, the Galadhrim have a rich history in Middle Earth. Many fans of the series have the same thirst for knowledge as many Elves, which may lead some to wonder exactly who the Galadhrim are and what they do.

Deep within the woods of Lothlorien dwell the Tree-People, better known by fans as the Galadhrim. Their journey to Lothlorien was a long one, seeing the proud people being established in the area during the Great Journey of the Elves to reach Valinor. This was all due to the fallout from the War of the Valar that saw all taking arms against the evil forces of Melkor. Upon reaching the eastern portion of the Misty Mountains, groups of the Elves began to find an appreciation for the lands they found themselves in. Wishing to go no further after admiring the beauty they’d found on their journey, the Teleri Elves, one of the Elf clans on the journey, ended up deciding to settle in the land.
This ultimately resulted primarily in the Nandor people of Teleri settling much of the surrounding area and creating a massive realm for these Elvish people. In the beginning, the Elvish people who settled the land were few in numbers, but they would soon grow, establishing prosperous kingdoms. As fans of Middle Earth history may know, these Elves would eventually befriend (and become enemies with) the Dwarves who would settle in the nearby mountains. As the Elves began to declare rulers of Lorien, the Galadhrim became established in the realm, both as a people and as a strong fighting force, capable of standing against the forces of Sauron.
Notable Members Of The Galadhrim
While the Galadhrim may not be focused on as much as some fans of the series would like, there are still a few notable members of the Elvish people. For starters, there were the ancient rulers of Amdir and Amroth. Perhaps most notable of the Galadhrim is Galadriel, with one of her titles being the Lady of the Galadhrim. Her husband Celeborn ruled their people alongside her, keeping Lothlorien safe against the threat of Sauron before eventually heading to the Undying Lands. Finally, fans of the Lord Of The Rings movies may be big fans of the warrior Haldir, someone who brings aid to the Battle Of Helms Deep.
Galadriel was an important member of the Galadhrim for many reasons, with the most obvious being that she helped to lead them. Having a long history in Middle Earth and being known as one of the most powerful Elves in existence, Galadriel made a wonderful ruler. She took hold of the Galadhrim when they were arguably at their weakest, seeing their strength and allowing the people to become strong once more. The Fellowship is given a variety of gifts from her on their journey, something that aided them both in battle and morale. Arguably, the quest to destroy Sauron never would have succeeded without these key gifts, including the Phial of Galadriel. In The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring, Galadriel even gifts Legolas with a powerful bow of her people:
“My gift for you, Legolas, is a bow of the Galadhrim, worthy of the skill of our woodland kin.”
Sent by Elrond to aid the Men of Helm’s Deep, Haldir leads a legion of Galadhrim against Sauron’s forces. In The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers, Haldir has this to say upon his arrival with aid:
“I bring word from Lord Elrond of Rivendell. An Alliance once existed between Elves and Men. Long ago we fought and died together. We come to honor that allegiance.”
Haldir is a mighty ally and strong warrior, especially when facing off against Orcs, but Sauron’s forces prove too much for the friend of Aragorn. This all may be starkly different from Haldir’s role in the novelizations, but in the movies, it is during the Battle of Helm’s Deep that Haldir meets his end. Being slain by Uruk-Hai, Haldir would die, with Aragorn being the last thing he saw before succumbing to darkness.
What Happens To The Galadhrim?
Over the course of their time in Middle Earth, the Galadhrim were never afraid to take to arms. Since the Second Age, they often took up arms against Sauron and his forces, playing a major role in the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, as well as in the War of the Ring. Sadly, a significant portion of the Galadhrim would fall during the Battle of Dagorlad. After more strife in the Third Age, including the death of their ruler Amroth, Galadriel and Celebron would take control of the Galadhrim, leading them into a new era of prosperity.
They would aid the Fellowship in their journey to destory the One Ring, and with the fall of Sauron, they would aid in the wiping out of the remainder of his forces. As both Galadriel and her husband would travel to the Undying Lands, so too would most of the Galadhrim. Whatever members of the Galadhrim remained in the lands were spread out and likely ended up resettling into other groups of remaining Elves to enjoy the relatively prosperous Fourth Age.
