Bosch: Legacy is known for its epic crime stories, but at the heart of the series is the relationships between the characters, and how these bonds are affected by the events in their lives. Maddie Bosch went through a traumatic event in season 2, when she was kidnapped by Kurt Dockweiler, and fellow cop, Rico Perez was there for Maddie in the aftermath of the incident, and their relationship became romantic.
As season 2 progressed, Maddie and Rico drifted apart somewhat and their relationship ended, but Anthony Gonzales, who plays Rico, has been confirmed to return for Bosch: Legacy season 3, which could mean Maddie and Rico might get back together, unless the creative team have different plans for him moving forward.
What happened between Maddie Bosch and Rico in Bosch: Legacy season 2?
Rico Perez first appeared as a recurring character in Bosch: Legacy season 1, making five appearances in total. Perez is an officer in the LAPD and one of Maddie’s new colleagues, as she gets to grips with her new career. Rico is instrumental in helping Maddie learn in her new job, and his kind nature doesn’t go unnoticed by her, as the pair strike up a platonic friendship.
In Bosch: Legacy season 2, Maddie and Rico’s relationship becomes romantic, as he is supportive after the Kurt Dockweiler ordeal. In Episode 3, titled ‘Inside Man’, Maddie and Rico pass each other in the station after she returns to work, and they agree to meet up for drinks later that night. They end up sleeping together, and the hook-up seems to be a good distraction for Maddie’s trauma.
In episode 4, ‘Musso & Frank’, Maddie tells Harry Bosch she is leaving his home, where she has been staying in the aftermath of her ordeal, and is going to live with Rico for the foreseeable future. Harry doesn’t want her to leave, but Maddie is keen to get out on her own again. Rico helps Maddie with her impact statement for the upcoming Dockweiler trial, as she is struggling, and his support for her is admirable.
Maddie’s career in the LAPD receives a boost when she is assigned to the Crime Reduction Unit, and while the relationship with Rico continues, Maddie has a lot going on and appears distant. Maddie shoots Ellis, and saves Harry’s life, and then has to go through the ordeal of giving her impact statement in the Dockweiler trial. Maddie ends up moving back in with her father after telling him things didn’t work out with Rico.
What other serious relationship has Maddie Bosch been in?
Maddie Bosch was in a couple of relationships in the original Bosch series, but her most prominent one was with a pediatric nurse called Antonio Valens (played by Johnny Rios). Like Rico, he was very supportive towards Maddie, and he was keen to move the relationship forward.
Antonio even met Harry Bosch, who seemed to approve of his daughter’s boyfriend. Antonio and Maddie were still in a relationship when the final season of Bosch came to an end, but the audience doesn’t know what happened to Antonio, as he doesn’t appear in Bosch: Legacy and no mention is made of how the relationship with Maddie ended.
Anthony Gonzales will reprise the role of Rico Perez in Bosch: Legacy season 3, but will he reconcile with Maddie Bosch?
Many characters will return in Bosch: Legacy season 3, one of which is Rico Perez, played by promising young actor, Anthony Gonzales. Plot details remain under wraps, with many fans wondering what could be in store for Rico in Bosch: Legacy season 3. Rico’s break-up with Maddie happened off-screen, so nobody really knows what caused things to end so abruptly.
Maddie and Rico seemed like a good match, but the relationship was very rushed, as Maddie moved in with him very soon after they first hooked up. It felt like Rico was a way to get some space, after moving back in with her father after the Dockweiler ordeal. Regardless of if Maddie and Rico reconcile in Bosch: Legacy season 3, it would be good to find out why the relationship ended, and if there is anything still between them.
Bosch; Legacy season 3 will be partly based on Michael Connelly’s book, The Black Ice, which sees an LAPD officer called Cal Moore, found dead of a suspected overdose after being involved in a drug investigation. The Bosch-verse is known for changing stories and characters from the books, as witnessed by Honey Chandler’s different role in the books, so this could possibly see Rico Perez replace Cal Moore as the victim in Bosch: Legacy season 3’s new case. This would be a good way to get Maddie Bosch involved in the case, and an organic way to get Harry Bosch on board to investigate it, like he does in the books.
