Highlights

  • Underwhelming reaction to David Corenswet’s Superman suit dulls hopes for upcoming movie.
  • Fans are debating whether Superman should wear red trunks with the suit.
  • Polarized positive or negative reaction would’ve generated more buzz than a mixed response.

James Gunn is currently filming Superman, with the highly anticipated new iteration of the superhero due to be released on July 11, 2025. Gunn had some very exciting news for fans this week with the big reveal of David Corenswet in the iconic Superman suit, which he released via his Instagram. However, the exciting reveal was met with an underwhelming reaction, which has dulled hopes for the upcoming movie.

Gunn has written Superman, as well as taking on directing duties, with fans eager to find out what he has in store for The Man of Steel. Gunn is also masterminding the new DC cinematic universe, alongside Peter Safran, with the hopes of emulating the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans will be awaiting further updates about James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, with the hope that they’ll receive a better reaction than the new costume.

However, the reveal didn’t receive the reaction that Gunn was hoping for, with many fans being underwhelmed by the announcement. Some fans posted on social media suggesting it looks too much like an MCU suit, while others claimed it looked as if it had been made with AI. But it hasn’t been all negative, with some fans praising the new Superman suit for honoring the past and trying to make the suit seem more realistic.

One fan known as The Moonlight Warrior commented on their X page:

The thing I love most about this Superman suit is the fact that it actually looks like a suit and has taken some damage. I’ve never been a fan of super suits that take next to no damage despite being thrown through countless buildings.

Some fans consider the suit to be a downgrade to Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel suit, but others seem happy that the red trunks appear to have made a return, with a lot of inspiration taken from the past. It is a difficult balance to strike with the hardcore fans, and the response was destined to be mixed.

The new suit has also been criticized by Zack Snyder’s second unit director on Man of Steel, Clay Staub.

Who thought this was the best option for a First Look? Really, I’m not joking, speaking solely from the layout perspective, the pose (pulling his boot on) making the suit chest and arms look bulky and rubbery. BTW are those Trunks we’re returning to, I’m asking for a friend?

This appears to be a mean-spirited remark from someone who no longer has any creative input in the Superman franchise, and it doesn’t help the movie, or create any meaningful conversation between the fans. It actually encourages them to react negatively towards James Gunn’s new movie, and his plans for the DC universe moving forward.

The underwhelming reaction is worse than a highly polarized positive or negative reaction.

The reactions to the David Corenswet’s Superman suit have probably not benefitted from being mixed, as a highly polarized positive or negative response would’ve created more buzz around the big reveal. Regardless of what fans think of the image of David Corenswet as Superman, at least it does answer some questions about the new movie, while also presenting some new ones for fans to speculate on until the movie is released.

If the majority of fan reactions were positive about the new suit, that would’ve created major hype over the new movie, and helped James Gunn prove his worst critics wrong in his new iteration of the superhero. Gunn desperately needs to improve his standing with fans after much criticism from a large majority of them. The underwhelming response has done nothing to improve or change people’s opinions, making it a very pointless decision to release it, with over a year still to go until the movie comes out.

A negative response from fans might’ve also been better than the mixed one, as it would create a conversation about the new movie, rather than nobody talking about it. There are bound to be more reveals in the future as the movie gears up for a big promotional campaign in the lead up to July 2025.

Many passive fans might not think the suit differs too much from the Henry Cavill’s Superman suit he wore in the most recent movies. But hardcore fans were quick to notice a number of differences between the suits. The main priority for James Gunn’s Superman is that the movie is well received when it is released, and fans who don’t like the suit, might change their minds when they see it on the big screen.
