  • Tenya Ida, known as Turbo Hero: Ingenium, showcases leadership, impressive quirk mastery, and strong morals.
  • Tenya’s growth throughout the series highlights his dedication, quick thinking, and impactful presence among his peers.

Class 1-A of My Hero Academia is the main focus of the U.A., featuring Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugo, and many other aspiring heroes. While each teenager possesses unique quirks that range from immense power to strategic support, every student has the potential to become a pro hero one day. Mangaka Kōhei Horikoshi excels at laying out the story of each character in My Hero Academia, both primary and secondary, setting the tone for their personalities and introducing each quirk, as well as their power levels and abilities. Though the focus is on Midoriya and his struggle to control his One For All quickly, each classmate receives their time to shine.

Tenya Ida, known as Turbo Hero: Ingenium, is an honor student who matches his charisma and high morals with the intelligence to lead a classroom. His grades aren’t the only impressive thing, as his Engine quirk allows him to run at blazing-high speeds, allowing him to finish a fifty-meter dash in 3.04 seconds. Ida finished sixth among all students during the U.A. entrance exam, and fourth during the quirk apprehension test, proving his ability to mix quirk mastery and intelligence into one complete package. Ida’s debut came in Episode 3, titled “Entrance Exam”, and he’s become prominently featured in many arcs to date.

If first impressions are a deal-breaker, Tenya may have difficulty making friends on his first day in class. Coming from an upbringing of noble heroes, Tenya tends to appear as unfriendly and intimidating, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Tenya is a straightforward individual who is earnest and comes with a high moral compass, which sometimes makes it hard to get close to others. He can be somewhat awkward at times as well, not knowing how to interact with people in his age bracket, and often following into tics, such as swinging his arms around in a chopping formation. Though his background may lead to some comical moments, Tenya always means well.

During his work studies, Tenya gives it his all, regardless of the assignment. When the students of Class 1-A break into groups to play heroes versus villains in one of the many class assignments, Tenya is paired with Ochaco Uraraka to play the bad guys, and Tenya plays the role perfectly. Laughing maniacally and announcing his evil plots like a villain pulled out of a James Bond movie, Tenya invests in the role and takes the assignment as seriously as possible while maintaining his competitive nature. As someone who dedicates himself to his studies, Tenya embracing the theatrics of the villain during the assignment is an excellent example of his dedication to excellence.

When Did Ingenium Start Growing?

During the U.A. Sports Festival, Tenya’s focus on impressing his school and those watching is the first sign of his development. Though it’s quite clear he always wants to do his best, regardless of the task, the Sports Festival is a whole other level. Tenya makes light work of Shiozaki Ibara, dodging her vine attack and using his speed to push her out of bounds, earning the victory. He comically defeats Mei Hatsume when her equipment upgrades given to Tenya malfunction as part of Mei’s ploy to showcase her beloved toys and what they can do, before forfeiting the match. However, Tenya wasn’t victorious against Shoto Todoroki in his final encounter, despite demonstrating tenacity and matching Todoroki’s skill at points.

Had it not been for him leaving the Sports Festival early, Tenya would have landed in a tie for third place alongside Fumikage Tokoyami. However, his performance was enough to convince many of his skills and ability to manage his quirk effectively, enough so to land 301 nominations from Pro Heroes, making him the fourth-most nominated participant at the Sports Festival. His performance was outstanding, but Tenya was not satisfied with the outcome, highlighting his shortcomings and the need for improvement with his quirk. Focusing on upgrading his calf engines, Tenya’s goal coming out of the Sports Festival was to aim higher than he ever had.

Leadership is a valuable commodity among heroes, and not many possess the level of Tenya’s. His knowledge, quick-thinking, and upbeat attitude are reasons why Midoriya hands over the mantle of Class 1-A president after stepping down. Tenya’s confidence is a primal characteristic, always maintaining a sharp focus and aiding those around him in times of need. During an evacuation drill that led to a stampede, Tenya kept his allies calm while leading the plan to discharge the chaos before it got out of hand. Tenya’s dedication to seeking results led to his team gaining the confidence to proceed with the mission.

Throughout his time in My Hero Academia, Tenya develops into one of the more impressive quirk users of Class 1-A. During the battle against the League of Villains, Todoroki chooses Tenya to join his side in a fight against Dabi. Though Shoto’s brother manages to escape through a portal, Tenya’s speed and ability to reach Mach 3 allow the duo to catch up. Though Tenya comes from a painful background with a tragic loss, he can keep a positive mindset and seek a brighter future. This mentality becomes contagious in the group, as everyone who learns of Tenya’s story realizes that no matter how poor the outcome, positivity can bloom from it.

When Will Ingenium Reach His Peak?

Tenya’s Engine quirk doesn’t possess the power or force to rank among the best quirks in My Hero Academia, but its utility is very supportive. Tenya can reach Mach 3 speed and beyond, which puts him in a great position to out-speed anyone in his way and get around any obstacle. Tenya can outrun many heroes who rely on flying and other emitting quirks to get around the city, and he continues to withstand his limits and push beyond. At times, Tenya seeks to ignore his quirk’s maximum output, which has helped him reach new heights. This motivation makes everyone around him aim for the same goal, making his entire group more resilient.

Due to the Recipro Burst ability pushing his limitations to the extreme, Tenya combines it with Recipro Extend, which assists with speeding up the process of his cooldown, allowing him to stabilize his max speed and keep going. Learning the capacity to painfully remove his engines and grow replacements, Recipro Turbo enhances his quirk for ten minutes, while Maximum Speed serves as his ultimate move. Tenya’s prowess on the battlefield and intelligence to think of a plan quickly while running towards danger is the very reason he is heavily involved in the fight against the League of Villains and the mission to restrain Tomura Shigaraki and bring an end to the villainous group.
