The Dragon Ball franchise has always been the Goku Show, and though Dragon Ball Z tried to undo this, it would ultimately cement it. The brief focus on Goku’s son Gohan was ended in order for the main man himself to come back into the spotlight, which many fans saw as undercutting Gohan’s potential. While this may be true, two other human-Saiyan hybrids might have even greater untapped possibilities.
Goten and Trunks were mainly focused on in the “Buu Saga” of Dragon Ball Z, but they showcased a dramatic amount of power even in their youth. This allowed them to master techniques that their fathers and Gohan had to train far harder at, meaning both boys were a lot stronger than they seemed. Here’s why the youngest Z Fighters may have also been the most powerful — even if others didn’t realize it.
Goten and Trunks Quickly Surpassed Even Gohan’s Power
Goten and Trunks are shown to be quite resourceful in DBZ, utilizing several attacks and techniques that older fighters also used. Goten learned to fly and other maneuvers that once befuddled his father Goku, while Trunks showed the same sort of cocky dedication to training as his father. The two would also engage in the Fusion technique that turned them into the powerful Gotenks, which would have made them a great match for Majin Buu if not for their goofing around. Gotenks could even turn Super Saiyan 3, despite the boys only ever seeing Goku do it once. Vegeta hadn’t even mastered the form beforehand, which says a lot about his and Goku’s sons.
Things that logically should have required more training were almost second nature to Goten and Trunks, as if they had a knack for learning new attacks with minimal effort. This, along with their own childish nature, was why they would loaf around in fights, as the simple fact that powerful attacks were so easy to do made things seem like a game. On the contrary, Gohan’s mastery of certain forms and skills was much more grueling, and this was despite him supposedly having such fortitude and potential as a fighter. This speaks to the different ways in which the Saiyan offspring were raised — and why the younger boys’ childhoods likely made them into even more powerful warriors.
Goten and Trunks Are Stronger Than Gohan for One Major Reason
Unlike the other guys in his family, Gohan has been a lot more studious throughout his life. This was definitely the case when he was a little boy, and it’s highly likely that if his evil uncle Raditz and the other Saiyans had never invaded Earth that he would have spent his days behind books instead of ever training. This extended to his life as a young adult, with Gohan largely giving up training to become a scholar in both of Dragon Ball Z’s sequels.
On the other hand, Goku’s wife Chi-Chi was far less imposing on Goten in terms of his education than she was with his brother, and the younger brother would remain a bit more active in his older years as well. Goten was also a lot more like his fighting-obsessed father, which may have swayed Chi-Chi’s feelings concerning his training.
As for Trunks, he was the son of Prince Vegeta and thus the next in line of Saiyan Royalty. It’s no surprise that his father would prioritize training over anything else, so Trunks likely had a childhood full of nothing but testing his physical limits. Thus, he and Goten would both have reached new levels of strength at an earlier and possibly faster rate than Gohan, and their continued martial pursuits only increased this. While Gohan remained strong, his veritable lethargy meant his full potential would never truly be achieved. The true limits of Goten and Trunks — let alone their combined form of Gotenks — remains a bit of a mystery, but their continued training and other developments could finally see this come to fore in the future.
