In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, where curses and sorcery reign supreme, every action leads to severe consequences. Yet, among the choices made by its characters, few possess the gravity and ripple effect as those enacted by Toji Fushiguro. Toji, the absentee father of Megumi Fushiguro, navigates the Jujutsu world as a rogue sorcerer and assassin. His life takes a pivotal turn when he’s hired to commit a very important hit: the murder of Riko Amanai, known as the Star Plasma Vessel, before her inevitable fusion with Master Tengen. This seemingly straightforward assignment is tinged with personal vendettas and hidden ambitions, setting in motion a sequence of events with massive implications. As the repercussions of Toji’s actions are felt throughout the Jujutsu realm, the lives of Suguru Geto and Satoru Gojo are forever altered. In the midst of this chaos, a singular question emerges: How did Toji’s decisions shape the destiny of the Jujutsu Kaisen world?

Why Did Toji Kill Riko?

Toji Shoots Riko

Toji Fushiguro’s decision to kill Riko Amanai was motivated by his employment by the Time Vessel Association, also known as the Star Religious Group. They hired Toji to carry out the assassination. However, Toji’s motivations were not solely driven by financial gain. While Toji didn’t harbor any personal animosity towards Riko, his decision to accept the assignment was influenced by more nuanced factors. Despite his disinterest in the specifics of Riko’s role as the Star Plasma Vessel and her merger with Master Tengen, Toji recognized the presence of formidable opponents like Gojo Satoru on the opposing side. This appealed to his pride and his broken ideals, motivating him to take up the challenge as a test of his skills and capabilities. Additionally, Toji’s resentment towards jujutsu sorcery, stemming from his rejection by the Zenin clan due to his lack of cursed energy, may have also contributed to his willingness to carry out the assignment.

The death of Riko, the Star Plasma Vessel, had profound effects on both Gojo Satoru and Geto Suguru. Assigned the task of protecting Riko from various religious factions seeking her demise, Gojo and Geto formed a strong bond with her. After rescuing Riko from the organization Q, they decided to take her and her caretaker, Misato, to Okinawa for safety. However, their vacation was short-lived as they were attacked by Toji Fushiguro upon their return. In the ensuing chaos, Riko was fatally shot by Toji, leading to immense guilt and anger in Gojo. As he carried Riko’s lifeless body, wrapped in a white sheet, Gojo contemplated seeking vengeance against those responsible. However, it was Geto who prevented him from succumbing to his rage, recognizing that their true enemies were not present. This event marked a turning point for Geto, as he grew disillusioned with the hierarchy and hypocrisy of the Jujutsu world, ultimately pushing him towards darker ideologies and a desire for radical change, as Gojo continued to become stronger and stronger. Soon after, Geto massacred a village of people who had imprisoned two young girls who could see cursed energy. Gojo and Geto, forever changed by her death, grappled with the haunting specter of their failure to protect her, haunted by the echoes of what might have been.

An endless cycle of exorcism and consumption. Exorcise. Consume. It’s a taste that nobody knows. The taste of a curse. Like ingesting a rag used to wipe up vomit. Exorcise. Consume.

Geto’s Descent was a Catalyst for Chaos

After becoming a cult leader as a ruse, Geto Suguru continued his quest to absorb curses to increase his own power, driven by a desire for sorcerer supremacy within the Jujutsu world. However, his ambitions were thwarted following the Night of a Hundred Curses, during which he was weakened by the combined efforts of Yuta Okkotsu and Rika before meeting his demise at the hands of Gojo Satoru. However, Gojo, still harboring love for his fallen friend, could not bear to dispose of his body, leaving it vulnerable to being stolen by Kenjaku.

Assuming the guise of Pseudo-Geto, Kenjaku exploited Geto’s powers and identity to orchestrate the devastating events of the Shibuya Incident and awaken curses, resulting in the upcoming Culling Game arc. Kenjaku’s plans, meticulously crafted over a span of a thousand years, were accelerated by the acquisition of Geto’s body and the absorption of Mahito’s abilities. This allowed him to unleash Uzumaki, a force that threatened the very fabric of reality, and initiate the brutal Culling Game. The consequences of these actions set the stage for the upcoming events of Season 3, plunging the Jujutsu world into unprecedented chaos and upheaval like never seen before.

The Takeaway

Toji Fushiguro’s actions ultimately set off a chain reaction that led to significant turmoil. By accepting the assignment to kill Riko Amanai, Toji played a direct role in triggering the events that followed. His decision to carry out the assassination, motivated by a combination of financial gain, pride, and resentment towards jujutsu sorcery, initiated a sequence of events that forever altered the relationships between key characters like Geto and Gojo. The death of Riko had profound effects on both Gojo Satoru and Geto Suguru, driving them towards divergent paths. Gojo’s immense guilt and anger following Riko’s death fueled his determination to seek vengeance and protect those he cared about.

Conversely, Geto’s disillusionment with the hierarchy and hypocrisy of the Jujutsu world pushed him towards darker ideologies and a desire for radical change. His descent into darkness further exacerbated the chaos within the Jujutsu world, culminating in the events of the Shibuya Incident and the Culling Game arc. So,while Toji may not have directly orchestrated all the subsequent events, his actions served as the catalyst that set the stage for the conflicts and turmoil that followed. In this sense, Toji can be seen as partially responsible for the chaos that ensued in the Jujutsu world.
