After the very heavy episode that aired last week, this week’s episode shows a return to the more humorous sides of Spy x Family. The first part sees the series return to Anya and her adventures at school. It’s been a while since she’s been seen interacting with her classmates, and this episode lets the audience see these kids hang out for the first time this season.
The next part features Franky in a rare combo with Yor as the two set out looking for a runaway cat. It’s a relatively tension-free episode, but the end hints at a more serious story coming up soon.

A Life-Changing Rumor
While playing in the cafeteria during lunchtime, Anya learns from Becky that classes will start being sorted by academic merit starting next term. This terrifies Anya, since her poor grades will naturally mean she’ll be separated from Becky. They then hear from an older student that the mythical Pastry of Knowledge has appeared in the other cafeteria. The Pastry is supposedly a secret dessert created by a master chef, and whoever eats it is guaranteed to become an imperial scholar. The pastry appears in a variety of forms, and this time it is macarons.
Anya and Becky immediately run to get some macarons of their own, followed by Damian and his cronies who have heard the same rumor. Unfortunately, the last order of macarons is purchased by George Glooman, who the group immediately harangue due to the trouble he caused before. He relents and gives them four of the five macarons he received, but that’s still not enough for all of them. The five children decide to have a match of Old Maid to decide who will manage to get a macaron, and who’ll be left out.

A Battle Of Bluffs
Anya doesn’t know the rules to Old Maid, so Damian tries to trick her into taking the Joker and making her come dead last. However, Anya’s mind reading allows her to easily sidestep his trap, and she takes first place with ease. However, the others refuse to believe that Anya could have won so easily when this was her first time playing Old Maid, so Anya relents and suggests that they play again. This time around, Anya plays worse on purpose so that she doesn’t look suspicious, but this makes things hard for her once she gets the Joker. Her poker face is so bad that it’s relentlessly clear to the others which card the Joker is.
Soon, Damian and Anya are the only two players left, with Anya still holding the Joker. Damian is bent on winning, but when he goes to take the card he needs to win, Anya bursts into tears due to not wanting to be separated from Becky because she couldn’t get the macaron to make her smarter. Stunned by her tears, Damian ends up losing on purpose, giving Anya the last macaron. Feeling bad, Anya tries to split the macaron with Damian, but he refuses her generosity and runs off, swearing that he’ll make Imperial Scholar even without the Pastry of Knowledge. Anya eats the macaron, and despite suddenly feeling a burst of energy, sees barely any improvement in her grades.

Franky’s Romantic Shenanigans, And Future Conflicts
Loid meets with Franky to get information on a job, and as they talk about Ostania’s underworld affairs, Franky tells Loid of the mysterious assassin group Garden, who has supposedly been working in the shadows for decades. Loid is skeptical such an organization exists, and goes to leave when Franky stops him and asks him to help find a cat named Kopi. Though he makes it sound noble, in truth Franky merely wants to impress the cat’s owner, Kacey, enough that she’ll go out with him. Loid leaves before he even finishes making his request, and in frustration Franky declares he’ll find the cat himself.
Franky immediately begins calling up contacts to help him look for the cat, and when he bumps into Yor while on his search, she offers to help him out during her lunch break. Franky shows off the various inventions he’s built to snare Kopi, but they are largely failures. In the end, Yor is the one who manages to catch Kopi, and Franky returns him to Kacey and her boyfriend, who Franky was unaware of. Heartbroken, Franky decides to devote himself to his work instead of romantic pursuits.
Back at work, Yor is called by her boss to take a call. It turns out that the call is from a client for her assassination jobs, and that she is receiving a new mission. It’s a pretty ominous sign that the next episode will bring a more serious story to the forefront. While the last few episodes have allowed us to see a new side to a lot of the side characters in Spy x Family, it’s good to get a more serious story every now and then as well.
