Eiichiro Oda, the manga creator of One Piece, teased the idea of making a spinoff to his popular Shōnen Jump series.

On Twitter, sandman (@sandman_AP) shared interesting information regarding Oda’s future after One Piece. In an official YouTube video from Feb. 14th, 2020, Oda humorously mentioned his interest in creating a new manga called “Two Piece” after One Piece ends. Although Oda commented in jest, he admires Akira Toriyama’s approach of occasionally releasing a brief manga series.

One Piece on Hiatus

For nearly 25 years, Oda has been writing and illustrating the One Piece manga series for Weekly Shōnen Jump. While the series finale is still far away, Oda confirmed that the Straw Hat Pirates are setting sail for their final adventure. To accommodate the manga’s forthcoming ending, One Piece went on a one-month break to allow Oda the time he needed to map out the last storyline in the series.

As One Piece begins its final journey, fans have revisited past comments made by Oda about his creative process. While Oda acknowledged that not everything in One Piece was pre-planned, he mentioned years ago that if “Red-Haired” Shanks began frequently appearing in the story, it would mean One Piece was reaching its conclusion. On a more serious note, Oda believes One Piece could continue without him if his poor health took a turn for the worse. Previous reports from March indicated that Oda suffered from sleep deprivation.

Oda’s Comment Regarding One Piece’s Live-Action

At the moment, Oda is still heavily involved in the multimedia development of One Piece. For example, the upcoming live-action One Piece TV series for Netflix will only be released if Oda approves of the final product himself. Meanwhile, the anime series is nearing the end of the Wano Country arc.

One Piece is available on streaming services like Netflix, Crunchyroll and Tubi. Viz Media handles the English release of the manga.
