The following contains spoilers for Episode 10 of Beast Tamer, available for streaming on Crunchyroll with English subtitles.

Beast Tamer is no stranger to archetypal characters, and it’s one of its more prevalent issues. There’s nothing wrong with going back to the well for character ideas, but failing to stand out from the ones that come before makes the series feel uninspired and unoriginal.

Despite this, Beast Tamer manages to nail one of its newest characters right on the head: Edgar Fromware. As the lord of the town the story is based in, Horizon, Edgar oversees all activities that happen within the town and governs its people. Unfortunately for Horizon, Edgar is, for all intents and purposes, the archetypal “noble jerk” that no one wants to live under.

Making his debut in Episode 10, Edgar approaches Rein, Sora and Luna as they are seeing the sights in the town. He proclaims that as Lord of Horizon, he will be taking the girls from Rein as his own. Rein, who is more than a little defensive over his relationship with his party members, politely but firmly asks Edgar to leave, but naturally, the lord isn’t happy about this.

He orders his guard escort to attack Rein, only for them to be effortlessly defeated. His remaining guards then take the nearby townsfolk hostage, only releasing them if Rein agrees to give the girls to him, but after unlocking a new ability, Rein defeats the guards as well. Edgar flees the scene, retreating to his home, and unfortunately for him, sparking the flame of rebellion in Rein and his party.

Edgar is repeatedly shown to be beating the life out of a fox girl in his home whenever he is upset. In the opening for the show, said fox girl is shown alongside the rest of the main cast, so it’s only natural to assume that she will be joining in the future — most likely in the next episode at the current pace. There’s no doubt that once Rein catches wind of this, he might finally blow a gasket.

This fox girl is probably the last companion that will join the party in this season of the show, and unless Beast Tamer continues to receive an adaptation, she could be the last member to ever be shown in anime format. Conversely, in the light novel and manga versions of the story, many more girls from other powerful tribes and backgrounds join Rein, each from equally uninspired and generic fantasy races.
