Another Star Wars Movie Is Officially Canceled At Lucasfilm

Highlights

  • Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige confirms that his Star Wars project has been canceled, putting an end to fans’ hopes of his involvement in the struggling franchise.
  • The cancelation is disappointing but not surprising, as the project had been announced over four years ago with no further details revealed.
  • Despite this setback, Disney still has promising live-action Star Wars movies in the works, and recent TV hits like The Mandalorian have reinvigorated the fan base. The future of Star Wars looks bright thanks to Disney’s dedication.

Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige was previously confirmed to be heading a new production within the Star Wars universe. However, the MCU boss recently put the final nail in the project’s coffin.

Plenty of exciting Star Wars projects were canceled throughout recent years, leading Disney to ask Lucasfilm to stop announcing Star Wars projects that are still in such early stages of development. Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, announced in 2020, was one hyped-up Star Wars project that was canceled.

It was rumored that Feige’s Star Wars project was also shelved with little chance of moving forward. However, now fans know for sure what happened to the mysterious project. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight at The Marvels‘ premiere, Feige was asked whether his Star Wars movie was still in the works, and he responded with a simple “No.”

Fans are disappointed to hear this news, as many hoped Feige could lend some of his moviemaking magic to a struggling Star Wars franchise. The Marvel Studios president’s Star Wars project was announced over four years ago, and other than a confirmation that it existed, no further details were ever disclosed. After so long without any updates, it probably shouldn’t be surprising that the project didn’t pan out.

Despite these troubling signs, Star Wars fans remained hopeful that Feige would lend his talents and creativity to the franchise, which has seen better days. Following the controversial sequel trilogy, the once dedicated Star Wars fan base became increasingly splintered, with some fans simply giving up on the legendary science-fiction universe. However, Disney still has a handful of promising live-action Star Wars movies set to begin production soon. Logan director James Mangold is making a movie covering the dawn of the Jedi, Dave Filoni is directing a movie that will wrap up the stories surrounding The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is directing a film focusing on Rey in the events following The Rise of Skywalker.

The Mandalorian and Andor have won many fans back, with Disney now taking a more varied approach to the franchise. Projects like The Mandalorian hearken back to the fun, light-hearted entertainment seen in some of the earlier Star Wars films. Meanwhile, Andor introduces a more dramatic, political-thriller-type atmosphere to the Star Wars universe. Thanks to Disney’s massive pocketbook and dedication to keeping the franchise alive and well, fans have good reason to be excited about the future of Star Wars.

The Star Wars saga is available on Disney Plus.
