The Origin Of Evil
Muzan Kibutsuji is the figure behind the central conflict that fuels the Demon Slayer series. As the first demon, his ability to transform humans into demons through his blood sets the stage for the perpetual struggle between demons and humans. An insatiable hunger for power drives his actions, so he has an array of demons at his disposal. Muzan instills fear and obedience in the demons he creates, ensuring their loyalty through fear and the promise of power. This control creates a hierarchy among demons, with Muzan at the top and the twelve Kizuki- the strongest demons− orchestrating their actions and moves in the series. Muzan wishes to be immortal by overcoming the sun and gaining the power to terrorize day and night. For thousands of years, he searches for the Blue Spider Lily to aid his hope for an immortal life. Also, his ability to transform humans into demons actively hinders the complete eradication of all demons. In this vein, Muzan became a plague upon humanity, and the constant threat of demon attacks brought forth the establishment of the Demon Slayer Corps to install order and hope in the world.
Formation Of The Demon Slayer Corps
Humanity’s Last Line Of Defense
The Demon Slayer Corps’ was formed due to the need for a coordinated response to the demon threats that permeate the world. The Corps trained people in many combat techniques, such as the different Breathing styles, to effectively combat the varied abilities of demons. These techniques enhance the demon slayers’ physical abilities and combat skills, enabling them to fight almost equally with demons. The creation and refinement of these techniques were crucial in providing the Corps with the necessary tools to face the demonic threat. For these reasons, swordsmiths skillfully crafted Nichirin swords to sever the heads of demons effectively. In other words, Muzan’s role in creating and perpetuating the demon threat directly influenced the need for such specialized and advanced combat methods.
Moreover, just like Muzan’s twelve Kizuki, the Corps has elite demon slayers known as the Hashiras. Each Hashira specializes in a particular Breath Technique and is responsible for leading and mentoring the lower-ranked members of the Corps. The Hashira is the frontline defense against the most formidable demons, like the twelve Kizukis. Below the Hashira are various ranks of demon slayers, each level signifying the individual’s experience, skill, and contributions to the Corps’ mission. This hierarchical structure ensures a clear command and communication channel to aid the members in responding swiftly and effectively to demonic threats. Moreover, Muzan’s existence thus directly results in the formation and continued relevance of the Corps, which stands as humanity’s hope and whose sole purpose is to eradicate all demons.
The Ubuyashiki Family
The Ubuyashiki family, headed by Kagaya Ubuyashiki, plays a pivotal role in the leadership and administration of the Demon Slayer Corps. The family has been at the helm of the Corps for generations, providing strategic direction, support, and guidance to the demon slayers. Their knowledge of demons passed down through the generations is instrumental in devising strategies to combat Muzan and his demons. Coupled with this, the Ubayashiki family suffers from a terrible disease that shortens their lives. Since Muzan originated from the Ubuyashiki bloodline, the family has borne the burden of destroying him. In this way, the generations of Ubuyashiki’s deep hatred towards demons passed through the existence of the Demon Slayer Corps, and this cycle of hatred is influenced and instigated by the presence of Muzan. The leadership of the Ubuyashiki family is crucial in maintaining the Corps’ resilience and determination in the face of the overwhelming power of Muzan.
The Protagonist’s Character Development
The Making Of A True Hero
Tanjiro Kamado became a demon slayer due to the brutal act of violence unleashed on his family. In a brutal attack, Muzan murdered Tanjiro’s entire family. His sister, Nezuko, however, survived but was transformed into a demon. The Kamado family tragedy instigated and motivated Tanjiro’s will to avenge his family and find a cure for Nezuko. Tanjiro’s loss −caused by Muzan− and his bond with Nezuko are central to his character development. His love for his sister and the desire to restore her humanity drive him to join the Demon Slayer Corps, where he hopes to find the means to achieve his goals. The personal vendetta against Muzan becomes a guiding force, shaping Tanjiro’s decisions, actions, and growth as a character in the series.
Throughout Tanjiro’s journey as a demon slayer, he encounters many powerful demons, each created by Muzan and presenting unique challenges. These battles are crucial for Tanjiro’s growth. By overcoming these demons, he refines his combat skills and becomes closer to becoming more powerful and defeating Muzan. Also, during Tanjiro’s arduous journey, he comes in contact with other demon slayers and individuals, each with the goal of defeating Muzan. The common goal of eradicating all demons unites these individuals (Swordsmiths) and fellow demon slayers to form a strong bond. Characters like Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira, amongst others, become Tanjiro’s close companions, each contributing to his growth and success. Also, the Hashira, particularly Giyu Tomioka and retired demon slayer Sakonji Urokodaki, play crucial roles in Tanjiro’s journey. Their guidance and belief in Tanjiro’s potential help him navigate his challenges, as their shared mission to defeat Muzan and protect humanity remains paramount.
