Filming has been completed on Bosch: Legacy season 3, but plot details are being kept under wraps. However, some details for the upcoming season can be drawn from Michael Connelly’s source material. Bosch: Legacy season 3 will be based on Connelly’s 2022 book, Desert Star, and his second Harry Bosch book, The Black Ice, released in 1993. Desert Star is a joint Harry Bosch and Renee Ballard adventure, and it’ll also provide the basis for the debut season of the Renee Ballard spin-off series.
Maggie Q has been confirmed to make her first appearance as Renee Ballard in Bosch: Legacy season 3, and this will act as a backdoor pilot to her own spin-off series which will be solely based on the book, Desert Star. In addition to this, Titus Welliver has been confirmed to make guest appearances as Harry Bosch in the Ballard spin-off. Fans have been speculating over what Desert Star actually refers to, and what could happen in the highly anticipated third season of Bosch: Legacy and the Renee Ballard spin-off series.

Michael Connelly’s joint Harry Bosch and Renee Ballard book, Desert Star, sees the two formidable detectives joining forces to hunt down a vicious killer who murdered an entire family. The case is considered to be Harry Bosch’s ‘white whale.’
The ‘Desert Star’ is a little flower that is found blooming in the Mojave Desert despite the less than ideal conditions. It is the place where Harry Bosch goes to channel his energy for the case that has had him stumped for years. The Desert Star acts as a makeshift memorial to the family who were murdered.
The story of Desert Star sees former LAPD detective, Renee Ballard, take back her badge after leaving one year previously, when the chief of police tells her she can come back under her own conditions. Ballard chooses to rebuild the cold case unit at the Robbery-Homicide Division, and this is when Ballard offers Bosch the opportunity to use the LAPD’s resources to investigate his ‘white whale.’
The deal is that Bosch will join the cold case unit as a volunteer investigator and help Ballard track down the brutal killer who murdered a whole family. Bosch and Ballard must put aside some old resentments to work together again to bring the killer to justice.
In addition to this investigation, Ballard also has another case that needs her attention. Councilman Jake Pearlman was key to getting the cold case unit up and running, and in return, he wants Ballard to look into the murder of his sister, and Bosch agrees to help on that investigation as well.

It’s an exciting time for the Bosch-verse, with the Renee Ballard spin-off series currently in development. Michael Connelly has written a number of books that focus on Bosch and Ballard’s joint cases, and Desert Star is the fifth book in the Ballard series, and the fourth to feature Harry Bosch.
Bosch: Legacy season 3 and the Renee Ballard debut season will both be based on Desert Star (Bosch: Legacy season 3 will also be based on The Black Ice) and, despite the likelihood of there being a few differences from the book, there will be a lot of similarities as well. For instance, Harry Bosch has already retired from the LAPD in Desert Star, and this is also the case in the current Bosch: Legacy timeline. However, in the book, Ballard offers Bosch the chance to join the unit as a volunteer investigator and use the LAPD’s resources. This might be the case in Bosch: Legacy season 3 and the Ballard spin off, but it’s more likely that Bosch will just operate as a private investigator, and agree to help Ballard, without being on the actual team.

Titus Welliver is confirmed to make several appearances in the Ballard spin-off, but a significant difference from the Desert Star book could see other characters from Bosch: Legacy also make appearances. Harry Bosch will likely need the help of Mo Bassi and Honey Chandler in addition to Ballard’s resources in the LAPD. There is also the chance of Maddie Bosch and other members of the LAPD helping out with the investigation. There hasn’t been any confirmation on who will be making guest appearances in the Renee Ballard series alongside Titus Welliver. Despite the spin-off series currently being in production, there haven’t been any casting announcements of series regulars in the series either.
