Jujutsu Kaisen’s story is one that takes many twists and turns, with the main characters often suffering many losses to the villains. One of the best aspects of this franchise is its tendency to recall things from far earlier on in the narrative, tying things together in a way that feels like it rewards the attentive viewer. One example of this kind of storytelling comes with the end of the prequel movie.

The ending of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is considered to be one of the most important moments in the history of the franchise as it began a cascading effect that directly led to where the series is now. From the death of some characters to the plotting and manipulation of others, let’s break down why the ending of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is one of the franchise’s most pivotal moments!

Yuta Okkotsu was a child who carried some of the highest Cursed Energy reserves in the history of the world. This is because when he was a child, he accidentally put a curse on his childhood friend, transforming her into an extremely powerful Vengeful Spirit that is far superior to most Curses that it went up against. Such exceptional circumstances earned Yuta the moniker of the “Cursed Child”, drawing the attention of the entire Jujutsu world.

Among these was Gojo Satoru, who believed in the near-limitless potential of the boy, so he chose to recruit him into Tokyo Jujutsu High in order to cultivate his talents. However, Gojo’s former classmate and best friend, Suguru Geto, also took an interest in Yuta, especially in his Vengeful Spirit Rika, so he could use his Cursed Technique of swallowing Curses to control and use them.

This conflict of interest over Yuta’s future is what brought Jujutsu High at odds with Geto’s family, leading to the ending of the film, where each team fought to keep the Cursed Child within their ranks, as they all knew of the latent power that he possessed!

An Incredibly Important Ending

The final battle of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was fought on 2 fronts. This is because, during the brief meeting of Geto and Gojo, the former warned of his plans to unleash his forces of thousands of Cursed Spirits to wreak havoc across Tokyo. To keep Yuta and Rika safe from the clutches of Geto’s technique, Gojo orders Yuta and a small force of Jujutsu High’s sorcerers to stay back at headquarters. However, unbeknownst to everyone else, Jujutsu High fell right into Geto’s trap!

The Cursed User snuck his way into Jujutsu High himself while the rest of the sorcerers were busy dealing with his Cursed Spirits in Tokyo. Eventually, this leads to his final confrontation with the sorcerers protecting Yuta and, later on, Yuta himself. While decent sorcerers in their own right, the heroes are simply no match for the Special Grade Suguru Geto.

I don’t care what anyone says, I really hate those monkeys. But, I never held any hatred for those in Jujutsu High.

Their defeat enrages Yuta, who engages the villain in an incredible battle that shows why each of these characters is considered to be in the highest grade in the Jujutsu world. Geto uses his incredible martial skills in tandem with his Cursed Technique against Yuta, who himself utilizes Rika and his own Copy technique in one of the best fights in the franchise!

The climax of the fight sees both sorcerers charge up their strongest offensive attacks; Geto’s Maximum Uzumaki and Yuta’s Love Beam. At the end of it all, Yuta wins the clash, searing off half of Geto’s upper body and leaving him grievously injured. The entire scene ends with Geto and Gojo’s final meetup, where, after imparting his final words to his best friends, Gojo kills him off-screen.

Implications for the future:

The reason why the ending of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 remains one of the most important moments in the history of the series has to do with what happened to Geto. This is because after Gojo seemingly killed him, his body went missing from where it was buried, since it was eventually overtaken by the ancient villain Kenjaku. Through his overtaking of Geto’s body, he was able to initiate the events of the current Jujutsu Kaisen story.

C’mon now, Satoru. Are you letting your mind wander during a fight?

Though he could have taken over anyone’s body, Geto was part of his plan to trap Gojo to take the strongest sorcerer in the world out of the picture to initiate the Culling Game. By taking over Geto’s body, Kenjaku was able to shock Gojo for long enough at the start of the Shibuya Incident to trap him in the Prison Realm, since he was the only person who actually would have prevented things from going the way that they did.
