Sean Astin doubts his character Bob’s potential return in Stranger Things season 5, acknowledging why it could cause trouble for two characters.
Only a few characters in the Stranger Things universe have left a powerful impact on viewers in such a short period. Stranger Things audiences fell in love with Barb in season 1, while season 2 gave fans another fan-favorite character in the form of Bob (played by Astin). Although fans know anything is possible on the Netflix show, Astin is sure about his character not returning in season 5 because of the potential impact on Joyce and Hopper’s storyline.

At LA Comic-Con (via The Direct) the Lord of the Rings star confessed that his character won’t return to the Netflix series and clarified that fans would have to accept his death. Astin shared that fans frequently approach him, inquiring about his possible return in Stranger Things‘ final season. He consistently responds with, “No, I’m Dead.” Additionally, he didn’t shy away from talking about flashback sequences.
[Fans would] say, ‘Are you gonna be in ‘Stranger Things‘,’ and I would say, ‘No, I’m dead.’ But why couldn’t they do a flashback [for Season 5]… to a happier time with—I know why they won’t. Because it’s going to be Hopper and Joyce, and they’re not going to want to flashback to a time when she was actually happy [laughs].
Even though Astin is unsure about his return, Stranger Things fans are hopeful that the Duffer Brothers might give them a treat by including brief cameos by Bob and even Barb. Fans all know Vecna, or even a greater threat, will appear in the final season to wreak havoc in Hawkins. Vecna has the power of tormenting people with their past traumas. So, it wouldn’t be shocking if Vecna crossed paths with Joyce again and made her recall when she was happy with Bob. Bringing back beloved TV characters isn’t new, and since David Harbour confirmed a clear ending in season 5, a surprise return of fan favorites in Stranger Things would be great.
Everyone knows that Stranger Things season 5 will conclude the show, and many people attached to the show have seemingly confirmed that the series will have a satisfying ending. Millie Bobby Brown is even ready for Stranger Things to end. The final season’s ability to conclude one of the most popular shows ever and what’s next for Netflix after wrapping up its major flagship is still uncertain. But there’s no doubt fans are already hyped for an action-packed final season.
