One Piece: The Superweapon Poseidon, Explained

Highlights

  • Rarely matched in world-building, One Piece’s slow pace pays off with massive revelations that reshape the series dramatically.
  • Little is known about the 3 Ancient Weapons in One Piece, with Pluton mentioned first, followed by Poseidon’s unique power over Sea Kings.
  • Poseidon’s history and power date back to the Void Century, tied to a promise by the legendary pirate Joyboy and the ancient ship Noah.

Very few franchises have the same world-building and allure as One Piece, not only in anime, but in all of fiction! Though it is undoubtedly a slow burn, the pacing of the series pays off when massive revelations are made hundreds of chapters after they are first mentioned, often changing the landscape and everything that fans know about them!

One such aspect of the One Piece story that benefits from this approach to storytelling is the 3 Ancient Weapons. Though very little is known about them, due to their sparse mentions throughout the story, one of them, called Poseidon, is known to be on Fishman Island and takes an incredibly unexpected form. So, let’s go over everything that has been revealed about Poseidon and see why it’s so powerful!

What Are The 3 Ancient Superweapons?

First Mentioned

One Piece, Episode 117, “Nami’s Whirlwind Warning! The Clima-Tact Explosion!”

Names

Pluton, Poseidon, Uranus

Though they remain a vital plot thread concerning the world of One Piece, very little is known about these ancient weapons. The first of them to be mentioned was Pluton during the Alabasta arc when Crocodile interrogates Cobra in hopes of finding out about its location. This is because Crocodile knew that the desert nation had some clue as to where the weapon itself was, which turned out to be true as a Poneglyph regarding its location was in some deep recesses of the land.

“Pluton”. It’s said a single blast from it can destroy an entire island without a trace.

All that is known, for the most part, of these Superweapons is that they were all constructed ages ago and were deployed during the Great War in the Void Century. They hold such magnificent power that they are said to have the power to bring ruin to the entire world, as Pluton is said to be an incredibly powerful Warship with the capability to destroy an entire island with no effort. Simply due to their power, the World Government has outlawed any research into the Void Century.

The Power Of Poseidon

First Appearance

One Piece, Episode 531, “Ryuga Palace! Brought by the Shark They Saved”

Debut Date

January 15, 2012

Story Arc

Fishman Island Arc

Though Pluton is said to be an incredibly powerful Warship and anything relating to Uranus is a mystery, Poseidon takes an unexpected form. Its power doesn’t outright come from pure offensive output like Pluton does, but the true strength of what it can do is truly terrifying, since Poseidon is a weapon that allows its user to communicate with, or even control, Sea Kings!

Though it isn’t an inanimate object like other weapons, this doesn’t make it any less deadly. In the past, during the Void Century, there was a Mermaid Princess who had the power to communicate with the Sea Kings. She belonged to the Ryuga royal bloodline, and after her death, her power to communicate with the Sea Kings was seemingly passed down to subsequent princesses who eventually came from the same family. In the current time, this power has reawoken itself within the Mermaid Princess Shirahoshi.

Though not much is known about how the ability to communicate with Sea Kings could make for an incredibly powerful weapon, the sheer size and strength of those creatures can easily make for an immensely destructive force for whoever they are used against.

At first, Shirahoshi could not control this power, as she summoned them inadvertently when she saw that her mother’s life was in danger. However, by the end of the Fishman Island Arc, she calls the Sea Kings to hold back the Noah from crashing into the island on purpose, showing that she now has far greater control over her innate abilities.

Importance of Poseidon

Aside from being an extremely dangerous power that can serve as a weapon to unleash incredible devastation across the land, it has quite a mysterious backstory with regard to its earliest mentions. What is known is that this power stretches back at least 800 years to the Void Century, where the legendary pirate, Joyboy, made a promise to the original Poseidon and Fishman Island, but for one reason or another, could not fulfill this promise.

Who in the world are you… Joyboy?

Knowledge of this power and the circumstances surrounding it largely turned into myth over the centuries, birthing a legend which stated that one day, a Mermaid with the power to control the Sea Kings would be born and that a man would come to guide her. This promise and story about Joyboy and Poseidon are tied with the ancient ship Noah, stating that Poseidon would use the Sea Kings to haul Noah to the surface of the ocean to complete its intended mission, which is why the ship has been protected in the depths of Fishman Island for centuries.
