  • Henry Cavill’s departure led to Hemsworth’s casting as Geralt in Netflix’s The Witcher; producers promise exciting twist.
  • The Witcher Season 4 in production; deeper dive into Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series planned, release expected in late 2025.

The Witcher star Freya Allan has finally broken her silence on the backlash over Liam Hemsworth’s casting as Geralt in the upcoming season of the Netflix series.

Henry Cavill played the role of Geralt in the series and became one of the primary reasons for the show’s success. However, right before the premiere of Season 3, Cavill announced that he would not be reprising the role of the iconic character in Season 4. As a result, Netflix revealed that Liam Hemsworth will play the aforementioned character in Season 4 of The Witcher. However, the news of recasting Cavill angered fans, and they started bashing Hemsworth on social media. Now, months after the backlash, Allan has come forward defending her co-star by saying how bad she feels for him.

Speaking in an interview with Collider, Allan opened up about the backlash received by Hemsworth and said how bad she feels for the actor making his debut in Season 4. The actor also noted how Hemsworth is going through rigorous training to truly embody the character before the world gets to see him as Geralt. Allan said, “I don’t want to speak for him, but from what I’ve understood, I feel like he’s really wanting to try and bring the heart. He’s been training. I feel sorry for him, honestly.” Additionally, she didn’t shy away from noticing how fandoms can be really toxic and “attack-y”. She added, “Number one, that fan base can be very attack-y, and it’s not an ideal situation to be in taking up someone else’s role. But I’m really excited to see what he does. And he’s such a lovely guy. I just hope that people give him the time of day, you know?”

It’s reasonable for some disappointment to arise from The Witcher’s casting changes. Cavill played the role of Geralt with utter precision and delivered some of the show’s finest moments. He played the character with ferocity and showed his brute strength while performing the fighting sequences. On the other hand, Cavill was a huge fan of The Witcher franchise before even joining the Netflix series and didn’t back away from doing his own stunts. Although many people have said a lot of negative things about Hemsworth being the next Geralt, fans should definitely give him a chance to prove his worth. It’s no secret that Cavill left the show to be a part of a bigger universe. So, the makers had to recast the role at any cost and chose Hemsworth for it.

The makers of the show have already revealed that they have a “very solid” plan for introducing Hemsworth as the new Geralt. In a recent interview, the producers of the show noted that they would be diving deeper into the world of Andrzej Sapkowski’s original book series. Also, the producers also assured fans that while the transition will stay true to the Witcher lore, they promised an exciting twist with the introduction of a new face for the character. Netflix recently announced that Season 4 of the series is now officially in production. No release date has been confirmed for the series, but reports suggest that it might arrive in the second half of 2025.

All three seasons of The Witcher are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
