In the world of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, anything is possible. One of the many theories to have circulated the internet is the identity of Jotaro Kujo’s Stand, Star Platinum. In Part Three, Stardust Crusaders, the concept of Stands is introduced, and the titular character’s ghostly counterpart has a striking resemblance to the Part One hero, Jonathan Joestar.
However, it is not only the surface-level appearance of the Stand that has led many to consider this possibility. There is an obvious contrast between DIO and Jotaro concerning their Stands’ powers, the history and curse of the Joestar family birthed during the confrontation with Jonathan and Dio Brando, and how the concept of the Joestars’ will is carried across generations to ensure Dio’s devilish plans are thwarted. Jonathan swore Dio’s evil would be defeated, and he refuses to rest until it is so.
Jonathan Joestar’s Similar Appearance and Warning to Dio Brando
The most visible evidence of the above theory is the appearance of Star Platinum. Jonathan and Star Platinum both have the same physique, wear thick shoulder plates and have hair similar in style and color. The attacks of Star Finger and Zoom Punch are also similar in their extending powers, and the roar of “Ora Ora Ora!” is in theme with Jonathan’s battle cry. Of course, these observable similarities are not concrete evidence, especially considering the fact that Hirohiko Araki may have designed the Stand to represent the Joestar family rather than being some sort of reincarnation of Jonathan. To link the possibility of Star Platinum being Jonathan’s spirit or relentless drive to stop Dio, there must be multiple linking factors.
A line of dialogue spoken by Jonathan in Part One, Phantom Blood, states: “If I die, my ghost is going to haunt you.” While this may be nothing more than gentlemanly trash talk from the martial artist, it could also foreshadow the conclusion of Phantom Blood and the consequences of Dio’s return. Jonathan does indeed die at the end of Phantom Blood, cradling the severed head of his former brother Dio, content with both their lives ending together. However, Dio returns in Part Three as DIO and obtains a new body: Jonathan’s. As DIO returns, so does the spirit of Jonathan within his great-great-grandson, Jotaro.
The Connection Between Star Platinum and The World
The Stand of the protagonist and antagonist are, in a manner of speaking, the same. During the final confrontation between Jotaro and DIO, Star Platinum unlocks the power The World to stop time, the same as the vampire’s power. The importance of this connection could be due to the pair sharing the Joestar blood, and even more intimately, a part of Jonathan. DIO’s head rides on the body of Jonathan while Jotaro carries the will, leading to the pair having similar powers.
Much of the evidence is circumstantial and could be considered representations of the Joestar family being passed on through the bloodline, with DIO’s new body interweaving into the Joestar family tree. However, the foreshadowing of Jonathan’s promise to Dio, Star Platinum’s appearance and the mirroring of the Stand’s power lean toward the theory having some validity. Jonathan’s spirit returning through his great-great-grandson to finish what he started, acting as the fist and shield against the one he swore to defeat, would certainly be far more poetic than simply coming down to Araki’s art style, the Joestar blood factor or mere coincidence.
