Scream 7 Needs To Top The Best Part of Scream 6

Highlights

  • Fans eagerly await Scream 7, focusing on a compelling plot, strong direction, and an intense opening kill sequence.

  • The opening kill scenes of the Scream franchise have always set the tone – Scream 7’s must be fresh and exciting to maintain interest.

No matter what happens in Scream 7, fans can expect a memorable plotline featuring returning final girl Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), great direction from Kevin Williamson, and of course, an opening kill sequence. Fans are still waiting for more details about the upcoming slasher sequel, from whether Jasmin Savoy-Brown and Mason Gooding will come back to the status of Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox). One thing is for sure, though: the opening scene will feature some compelling hints at the new Ghostface.

Since Scream 6 featured a fascinating opening sequence with a big twist, fans would love for the same thing to happen in Scream 7. After looking back at the impressive Scream 6 opening kill, there’s a lot that Scream 7 could do.

Scream 7 Needs An Even Better Opening Kill Sequence Than Scream 6

Scream 7 should feature a unique and compelling opening kill that fans haven’t seen before. Scream 6 had a satisfying opening sequence that subverted expectations: two separate kill scenes. The ending of Scream 6 is fairly predictable since it features the main characters beating Ghostface. However, theScream 6 opening featured more than one Ghostface who weren’t working together. Since this had never been done before, it opened up a whole new world of creative possibilities for the slasher franchise.

Film prof. Laura (Samara Weaving) is going on a date when Jason Carvey (Tony Revolori) kills her in a dark alley. The New York City setting of Scream 6 makes this scene even more effective since it’s crowded and loud and no one is going to help her. Fans learn that Jason and Greg, his roommate, want to murder Tara (Jenna Ortega) and Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) so they can complete Amber Freeman (Mikey Madison) and Richie Kirsch (Jack Quaid)’s movie. In an unexpected twist, Jason Carvey isn’t the real Ghostface. When another Ghostface phones Jason, he realizes he’s in trouble, and Ghostface kills Jason.

While it will be tough for Scream 7 to beat Scream 6‘s brilliant opening sequence, it’s necessary. Whether there is a fun twist like just one Ghostface or the horror sequel continues the tradition of including several killers, the opening of Scream 7 needs to have an intriguing spin. It’s not enough to feature a minor character being killed by Ghostface in their house, which is how most Scream movies begin. The Scream 7 opening definitely has to be better than the boring Scream 3 opening scene which doesn’t add anything fresh to the franchise. Due to all the changes that happened behind the scenes of Scream 7, fans have even higher expectations for the next sequel. They don’t want to see the same old opening sequence, and if that is what happens, they will lose interest in the rest of the story.

The Opening Kill Scenes Of Every Scream Movie

  • Scream (1996): Casey Becker (Drew Barrymoore) making popcorn and watching a horror movie
  • Scream 2 (1997): Phil Stevens (Omar Epps) and Mauren Evans (Jada Pinkett Smith) getting killed durin ga screening of Stab
  • Scream 3 (2000): Ghostface kills Christine Hamilton (Kelly Rutherford) and Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber) at home
  • Scream 4 (2011): Ghostface kills Marnie Cooper (Britt Robertson) and Jenny Randall (Aimee Teegarden) at home after they watch a Stab movie
  • Scream (2022): Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) fighting Ghostface at home and talking about elevated horror

The opening kill scenes of Scream are so important because fans look forward to them and they have always set the tone for the movie. Whether they are a little scary with some horror movie meta humor thrown in, or they are surprising and fun like Scream 4 and Scream 6, they are one of the parts of the franchise that fans get the most excited about. A stale opening will make fans think that the Scream franchise should end.

The directors of Scream 6, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the memorable opening kill sequence of the movie. Gillett said:

“Obviously, it was the first thing we read when we read the script. There is a standard that’s been set by these movies that the opening, as its own little contained short film, has to achieve something really specific, and set the tone for the rest of the movie, and also has to live up to what exists as the openings in the lineage of this franchise. This one for us was the most surprising and shocking.”

What Could Happen During Scream 7’s Opening Kill Sequence?

Whether Ghostface lives to change up Scream‘s format or Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) kills them at the end of the movie, Scream 7 needs to do something new and different with the opening kill.

When thinking about possible characters for the opening sequence, some think that Sidney has to be there. There are many fan theories about the Scream 7 opening kills, including Ghostface targeting Sidney at home with her family. This is definitely one path that the slasher sequel can go down. It would be satisfying since fans missed Sidney in Scream 6 and have been waiting to see how much mentally and physically stronger she has gotten now that time has passed since Ghostface first targeted her. Watching Sidney fight Ghostface would add necessary depth and detail to the story.

While Scream 7 can’t copy Scream 6 and feature an epic Ghostface fake-out, the Scream 7 opening scene could feature Ghostface in a different location. This would be compelling since no one would expect it and it would also raise the stakes since it would prove that Ghostface can travel anywhere. Of course, this kill scene would have to be connected to Sidney somehow, but perhaps Sidney has done some traveling during her time away. This would make fans look forward to the rest of Scream 7 and feel exciting.
