Highlights

  • Invincible’s Season 2 finale featured clever Easter eggs, including a Fortnite reference and other nods to popular franchises.
  • The episode included a scene with a weapon similar to Fortnite’s Dragon’s Breath Sniper, adding to the excitement for fans of that franchise.
  • Showrunner Simon Racioppa hinted at more seasons of Invincible with the potential for additional cameos and adaptations of modern IPs.

The Season 2 finale for Invincible included a subtle Fortnite reference during the titular hero’s climactic showdown with Angstrom Levy. The last episode of Invincible‘s latest season featured Easter eggs alluding to a variety of popular franchises, with one scene even providing a plausible canon explanation as to how Mark Grayson made an appearance in Epic Games’ massively popular battle royale.

Potential spoilers for the season 2 finale of Invincible are below. Reader Beware!Invincible Season 2 Episode 8, “I Thought You Were Stronger” featured more than a few clever details throughout Invincible’s battle with Angstrom, many of which were lifted straight from the pages of the original comics. Longtime fans of the franchise and the superhero genre will likely recognize several cameos from beloved titles, though some of the featured Easter eggs were given distinct redesigns to avoid possibly infringing on their owners’ copyright. Additionally, one particular scene included a blatant reference to Fortnite, which added Invincible, Atom Eve, and Omni-Man as playable guest characters back in 2023.

The scene in question occurred during Mark and Angstrom’s final battle. For context, Angstrom developed the power to open portals to other worlds after his previous encounter with Invincible, an ability which he then used to send the hero back and forth across the multiverse. This happened several times throughout the finale. During one of these multi-world shenanigans, Mark emerged from a portal wielding a rifle as an improvised melee weapon. The firearm was only on screen for a few seconds but closely resembled the Dragon’s Breath Sniper, an Exotic weapon from Fortnite‘s vast arsenal.

The Season 2 finale was a treasure trove of similar Easter eggs. Apart from the Fortnite reference, Episode 8 most notably featured a pseudo-cameo with Agent Spider, an arachnid-themed hero who bears striking similarities with Marvel’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and was even portrayed by Peter Parker voice actor Josh Keaton. Showrunner Simon Racioppa claimed he and his team wanted to go even further with the Easter egg but believed Agent Spider was the best they could do given the state of the property.

The Future of Invincible

While Season 2 is now at an end, fans can take heart in knowing that more seasons for Invincible are already in production. Racioppa didn’t disclose whether viewers can expect more cameos in the series’ future, but did reveal he was open to the idea despite the challenges the production faced in securing the rights to certain beloved characters. On that note, while the classics are still fun to see, it doesn’t change the fact that the original Invincible comics began serialization back in 2003. The superhero scene has changed in the time since its first issue was released, and now there are several popular IPs from the modern era that would fit right in with the animated adaptation.
