Despite receiving dismal reviews, Five Nights at Freddy’s broke several box office records during its theatrical run. However, the movie seems to have shattered all expectations and achieved a major box office milestone.
The Five Nights at Freddy‘s movie sees Josh Hutcherson take on the role of Mike Schmidt, a security guard hired at a spooky pizza place and arcade with animatronic mascots possessed by deceased children. Five Nights at Freddy’s received poor reviews but still witnessed a record-shattering opening weekend and has now become one of the year’s biggest movies.

Since the day of its release, Five Nights at Freddy’s has broken several records and taken the box office by storm. As noted by ComicBook, the supernatural horror film has earned more than $300 million at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing horror film of 2023. Five Nights at Freddy’s is also Blumhouse’s highest-earning film, leaving behind M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable sequel Split, which made $278.5 million during its theatrical run.
Five Nights At Freddy’s made $80 million in North America over its opening weekend. Before Five Nights at Freddy’s, 2023’s top-performing horror movie was Scream VI, earning $44.4 million in its first weekend. Five Nights at Freddy’s also set the record for the biggest Halloween opening weekend, leaving behind 2011’s Puss In Boots. Besides earning massive figures domestically, the film also annihilated all the competition in international markets by grossing $132 million and scoring the biggest global horror opening of 2023.
All the records achieved by Five Nights at Freddy’s are astonishing when fans realize that the movie was released simultaneously with Peacock. Becoming the highest-earning horror film of 2023 is significant for the video game movie, which is a new film series for viewers. It did better than the sequels of major film franchises, including Conjuring, Saw, Insidious, Scream, and Evil Dead. The Five Nights at Freddy‘s movie included features from the popular game series and even introduced the ominous animatronic known as Springtrap.
This level of success would surely encourage Blumhouse to work on future installments. When the 2018 Halloween reboot became a huge hit, the production company announced two sequels: Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends. Five Nights at Freddy’s has achieved a similar accomplishment by earning almost 15 times more than its production budget. Even though Blumhouse hasn’t announced any sequel yet, it wouldn’t be surprising if the production giant decided to turn this into a franchise.
