Kentaro Miura’s Berserk is the epitome of seinen manga. The author managed to create a dark, twisted fantasy that was somehow still elegant. Berserk has many notable features that make it stand out from all the other manga titles. Firstly, the art of the series is phenomenal, and only a few titles come close.

Guts
First Appearance: Black Swordsman
Guts is the main protagonist of Berserk, and he is among the most well-known anime characters. Guts had a very turbulent childhood, and things didn’t get any better for him even after he grew up.
Guts temporarily found happiness when he joined the Band of Hawk. Unfortunately, it did not last for long as Griffith destroyed the entire group. Considering the trauma that he has endured, it is a miracle that he is still alive.
Griffith
First Appearance: Golden Age
At one point, Griffith was Guts’ best friend, and together, they took the Band of Hawk to new heights. Griffith and Guts were close, which is why the former fell apart after Guts left the group.

Griffith ended up doing something rather foolish, and he was harshly punished by the King of Midland for it. Even after being rescued, it didn’t seem that Griffith would survive. However, Griffith refused to see his dream crumble, so he used the Behelit to trigger the eclipse. This caused Griffith to be reincarnated as one of the members of the God Hand.
Casca
First Appearance: Golden Age
Casca used to be a member of the Band of Hawk and she was Griffith’s most trusted underling. She was an excellent fighter who could take on much bigger opponents. Due to this reason, the entire Band of Hawk respected and feared her.
Casca eventually fell in love with Guts, and the two would have lived a happy life if not for Griffith. She was physically assaulted by Griffith, which broke her mind. In an attempt to fix her, Guts’ group traveled to Skellig.
Schierke
First Appearance: War Cry of the Wind
Schierke used to be Flora’s disciple, and she had a great deal of respect for her teacher. Despite being so young, Schierke is not reckless. In fact, she is one of the more rational characters in Guts’ group.

Schierke knows about many different kinds of spells and has used them to get out of many perilous situations. She is able to perform Astral Projection, which has saved Guts’ life many times. Without Schierke, Guts would have definitely lost his mind to the Beast of the Darkness.
Farnese
First Appearance: Black Swordsman, Again
At the time of her introduction, Farnese was fully devoted to capturing heretics. She didn’t change her mind until she met Guts, which opened her eyes to the true nature of the world.
Farnese eventually became a member of Guts’ group. It took her a while to adjust to the new environment, but Schierke’s presence made things a bit easier. Farnese has an aptitude for magic, and with time, she will develop into an excellent mage.
Serpico
First Appearance: Black Swordsman, Again
Serpico is Farnese’s half-brother and personal bodyguard. He had a terrible childhood, but he didn’t let it affect him mentally. Serpico grew to be a polite and smart individual. He rarely fights without a motive, and most of the time that he does, it is because of Farnese. Serpico is extremely overprotective of his sister and will do anything to protect her from harm.
Serpico is a talented swordsman, and he has slayed many monsters with his blade. Serpico’s style of fighting relies on nimble footwork and his tactical intelligence. He lulls his opponents into a false sense of security before striking them down elegantly.
Isidro
First Appearance: Kushan Scouts
Isidro was an ordinary thief who survived on scraps. Despite being so young, Isidro knew how to live in the harshest of conditions. Isidro grew up on the story of the Hundred Man Slayer, which is about Guts.
However, Guts has never told Isidro that the tale is about him. Isidro hardly has physical strength, but he is a cunning individual. He is able to read a situation quickly and find a way to get out of it.
Zodd
First Appearance: Nosferatu Zodd
Zodd is one of the strongest apostles in Berserk. Guts encountered the monster when he was still a member of the Band of Hawk. The apostles challenged Guts to a fight and was rather pleased to see a human who could withstand his blows.
Zodd is considered a legend by soldiers. They believe he turns up on the battlefield every now and then. As an apostle, Zodd has incredible strength, and he can easily slaughter an entire army.
