The Egghead Arc of One Piece is becoming increasingly complicated for an arc not many expected. Not only have the Straw Hat Pirates run into Dr. Vegapunk and Jewelry Bonney, but they now have to escort the former off the island before CP0 can kill him. To make matters worse, Admiral Kizaru is on his way with a fleet of ships. The best option would be to sail away as soon as possible, but it might not be that simple.
Bonney still has some unfinished business with Vegapunk. She needs him to fix her father, Bartholomew Kuma, and restore his humanity, and has even threatened to kill him if he doesn’t. She might not let the doctor leave the island until he’s agreed to her terms. If this happens, then the Straw Hats could be forced into a fight with CP0 as well as the approaching Admiral.
Will the Straw Hats Have to Stay on Egghead and Fight?
Bonney might not even want Vegapunk to leave the island, at least not right away. Most of the laboratories and tools he could use to fix Kuma should be at his main base of operations. If the Straw Hats sail away with him, there’s no guarantee he’ll end up in a place where he can do what she wants him to.
Even if Vegapunk could take his tools with him, Kuma is presumably on his way to Egghead anyway. Nothing is confirmed, but he was last seen using his Paw-Paw powers to send himself to an unknown place; many fans are expecting his destination to be the island of science. If it is, then Bonney will have everyone she needs in just the right place.
If any of this happens, then fans can expect something like a reversal of the War of the Best at Marineford. The Straw Hats will have to maintain a defensive line and protect Vegapunk while he works on fixing Kuma; the doctor may also need time to do something about the former Warlord’s damaged body. For the Straw Hats, this will mean going up against CP0 agents like Lucci, Kaku, and Stussy, as well as the Seraphim they recently gained control of. By the time they finish with that, Admiral Kizaru will have surrounded the island with his ships and things will get even more serious. The only reason they’d agree to any of this is if they either sympathized with Bonney’s plight or Bonney threatened their escort’s life. Either way, they’d have to stay on Egghead because of the Supernova.
If the story does go this route, then the Straw Hats would have a reason to engage in a fight they might have otherwise avoided. This would certainly complicate their escort mission, but if they come out on top, they should make worthwhile allies out of Bonney, Vegapunk, and Kuma all at once. This is to say nothing of the notoriety they’ll gain if they beat Kizaru. Bonney’s desires may lead everyone down a dangerous path, but it’s also an action-packed and, in some ways, necessary one. As for what her plan was if Kuma wasn’t headed for Egghead, that remains to be seen.
