Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 2 has taken the world by storm, and one cosplayer decided to celebrate the film’s release in the most unique way possible.
The new franchise’s first movie, Dune, was released in 2021 and introduced the world to several eye-popping characters. However, The Sandworms featured in the film quickly captivated viewers, emerging as instant fan favorites due to their intriguing presence. As a result, to amp up the movie experience, a cosplayer decided to bring the enormous creature to a cinema, surprising movie-goers with an unexpected guest.
TikTok user Josh Gammon shared a video where theater attendees at a Dune: Part Two screening were treated to an extraordinary sight – a cosplayer cruising on a motorized sandworm throughout the building. The cosplayer accurately copied Paul’s Fremen outfit from the movie, including the stillsuit and clothing. Additionally, the cosplayer replicated the character’s riding technique on the motorized sandworm, using two hand spike props to stay balanced. The movie-goers seem to be enjoying the moment and capturing it on their phones.
While Sandworms were initially feared in the first film, Dune 2 portrays these magnificent creatures as allies, changing the audience’s perspective. The moment when Paul Atreides rides one of the biggest sandworms on Arrakis cements his place as one of the natives of Arrakis. Dune 2 transforms the sandworms into war instruments, and they play a crucial role in balancing the power dynamics between the oppressive House Harkonnen and the resilient Fremen. The film starts with Paul and his mother, Lady Jessica, becoming a part of the Fremen community. Paul has decided to avenge his father’s death and fight the Harkonnens. As Paul tries to become stronger, Stilgar, one of the prominent figures in the Fremen community, believes Paul is Lisan al Gaib, who will take the people of Arrakis toward paradise.
Dune 2 has received positive reviews from across the globe and has become Villeneuve’s second-highest-rated movie ever on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, the movie jolted the global box office with a massive $178.5 global opening. Dune 2 earned over $97 million internationally and $81.5 million in North America. The sequel nearly doubled the opening weekend earnings of the first Dune film, which, in 2021, amassed $41 million domestically during its opening weekend. The first film grossed over $433 million globally during its theatrical run.
But the opening figures of Dune: Part Two have made it clear that the movie is set to become one of the year’s highest-grossing movies, and the positive word-of-mouth will only help it achieve that milestone. If so, Villeneuve’s Dune 3 plans may be realized, much to the thrill of fans worldwide who believe the story is incomplete. So, audiences who want Villeneuve to revisit Dune better encourage others to witness Dune 2 on the big screen so Warner Bros. can see there’s an eager audience for more stories in this science-fiction world.
Dune 2 is currently playing in theaters.
