New Deadpool 3 Set Photos Reveal Surprise Connection To An Underused MCU Hero

Highlights

  • Deadpool 3 is living up to its reputation as a shameless parodist, with no character or story off-limits to mess with.
  • The movie aims to cram in as many references to other Marvel projects as possible, including the possibility of Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight appearing.
  • The presence of vehicles from Moon Knight and Captain America: The First Avenger in set photos suggests that something wacky is going on in Deadpool 3, involving unexpected character crossovers.

Deadpool 3 is seemingly living up to its lead character’s reputation as a shameless parodist to whom no character or story is off-limits to mess with. This now appears to include one particularly underused yet beloved hero that fans have been anxious to see again, and they aren’t the only one.

With Deadpool 3 being the only MCU movie set to release in 2024, it seems fitting that it wants to cram in as many references to other Marvel projects as possible. This includes the unkept secret of Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine alongside Ryan Reynolds’ titular (and effectively immortal) merc with a mouth alongside a steadily growing list of other heroes keeping the rumor train rolling. Although few can hope to top the claims that Taylor Swift is set to appear in Deadpool 3, a new batch of set photos may excite a slightly niche portion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom.

Prominent industry insider CanWeGetSomeToast has reared their curious name on Twitter with several authentic-looking set photos from Deadpool 3. These photos are interesting because they feature recognizable vehicles, most notably the cupcake van from the surprise hit Oscar Isaac-led Disney Plus series Moon Night. While the van appears modified with several gadgets jutting out from the sides, it’s the same gaudily-colored monstrosity used in a shockingly fun action set piece. While he doesn’t appear in the set photos, this heavily implies the possibility that Isaac’s Moon Knight will appear in Deadpool 3, and he may not be alone.

Another notable vehicle in the photos is the snazzy coupe driven by Hugo Weaving’s villainous Red Skull in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. Like the cupcake van, this one also appears to be sporting some modifications, including hilariously tacky flame decals and an open hood. But what does this mean for the upcoming movie? Moon Knight and Red Skull are likely the last two characters fans expect to see in the same place. So there’s something wacky going on in Deadpool 3.

While little is known about Deadpool 3, it’s already set to be the first MCU movie with an R-rating, just like its 2 predecessors before joining the eminent superhero franchise. Previous set photos have shown Jackman’s Wolverine in a comic-accurate costume and Reynolds himself (or at least his stunt double). But new info coming out always feels about as chaotic as Deadpool’s typical storylines. Along with the obvious X-Men connection via Wolverine, Deadpool 3 has been rumored to feature characters from Daredevil and even Loki, with an alleged storyline revolving around recruiting heroes from across the timeline to fight Kang. Perhaps the possible presence of Red Skull means that not all of the heroes are, well, heroes.

Deadpool has done many reprehensible things in the Marvel comics, but he’ll seemingly play the hero this time. It’s a role he’s gotten quite familiar with in his previous films, usually featuring a less-than-enthusiastic team-up with some less famous X-Men members (despite Brianna Hildebrand’s Negasonic Teenage Warhead deserving to be an A-lister). So, good for him to move up in the superhero world.

Deadpool 3 is set to release theatrically in the US on July 26th, 2024.
