  • Maddie’s progression hints at a future role as a detective in the LAPD, possibly in a spin-off series.

Bosch: Legacy season 3 recently wrapped filming, with a release date not confirmed yet. Titus Welliver will return as private investigator, Harry Bosch, alongside Mimi Rogers as district attorney hopeful, Honey Chandler and Madison Lintz as rookie cop, Maddie Bosch. Fans are speculating about what could be in store for the three co-leads in season 3, with Maddie’s career in the Los Angeles Police Department of particular interest, as she rises up the ranks. Her father, Harry Bosch, was a legendary detective before his retirement, which raises the question of Maddie following in his footsteps as a detective in season 3.

Maddie Bosch has arguably gone through the biggest transformation of all the characters in the Bosch universe. the audience first met her when she was a teenager in the original Bosch series. She worked as Chandler’s assistant at her law firm as the show progressed, before embarking on a career in the LAPD when Bosch: Legacy began in 2022. Season 3 could see Maddie make further progress in her career in the department, as she shows signs of possessing her father’s crime solving skills. Bosch: Legacy will be using Michael Connelly’s 1993 book, The Black Ice and his 2022 book, Desert Star as a template for season 3, with a highly anticipated appearance by Renee Ballard confirmed, before that character stars in her own Bosch: Legacy spin off series.

Maddie Bosch showed an interest in criminal justice throughout the original Bosch series, with her initial focus being on the legal side of things, before deciding that a career in the LAPD was really what she wanted to do, after seeing her father, Harry Bosch, track down criminals as a career.

Bosch: Legacy season 1 saw Maddie Bosch joining the LAPD as a rookie cop, and she soon became close with her training officer, Reina Vasquez, as they took to the dangerous streets of Los Angeles. Her investigative skills were put to the test when she investigated a series of brutal rapes, which led to a man called Kurt Dockweiler becoming a suspect, and he ended up kidnapping Maddie at the end of the first season.

What happened to Maddie during her kidnapping ordeal changed the character forever, but she returned to light duties at the front desk of the LAPD in season 2, and it wasn’t long before she was back in action, when she was recommended for a position in the Crime Reduction Unit.

The CRU (as it’s known in short) focuses on street crime, and it gave Maddie the opportunity to get back out there while she still nursed the psychological effects of her kidnapping. Harry Bosch was proud of Maddie’s rise up the ranks, but was concerned that it might be too soon after the Kurt Dockweiler ordeal.

Maddie is on the scene to save her father’s life at the end of season 2, when he tracks down Lexi Parks’ murderer, Don Ellis, to a marina, and Maddie shoots him dead before he can kill her father. The shooting is ruled to be justified by Internal affairs, and it sets Maddie up for further progression in her cop career in Bosch: Legacy season 3.

Maddie’s role in the CRU is very much in the early stages, and as much as her career trajectory is taking her towards a future role of a detective, Bosch: Legacy Season 3 is unlikely to push her to that position prematurely. There are many other cases and stories to explore in the CRU in season 3, meaning that a detective role for Maddie Bosch would be better suited later on in Bosch: Legacy‘s run. The success of the show, and the faith Amazon has in it, will surely mean there is plenty of time to explore Maddie’s career growth.

Maddie works with Reina Vasquez in the CRU, and season 3 is likely to explore her character in more depth, so it’s key that she stays close to Maddie, as they are so intrinsically linked. The season 2 cliffhanger also set up some tension for Maddie and Harry Bosch, so expect season 3 to focus on that, and Maddie’s own investigation into Preston Borders’ potential involvement with her father in the killing of Kurt Dockweiler.

Maddie Bosch is showing signs of possessing the same investigative skills as Harry Bosch, so it is inevitable that she will become a detective in the LAPD at some point during Bosch: Legacy. The Bosch universe is expanding, so this could quite possibly be explored in a spin-off series centered on Maddie’s role as a homicide detective. Maddie could also be set to appear in the Renee Ballard spin-off series, as it has been confirmed that characters from Bosch: Legacy will crossover into that show, with Harry Bosch confirmed to play a role in its debut season.
