The following contains spoilers for Episode 4 of KonoSuba Season 3, “Divine Punishment for This Handsome Gentleman Thief!,” now streaming on Crunchyroll.
After essentially making a nuisance of himself in the royal palace, Kazuma declares that he will capture the thief targeting nobles as a last attempt to stay in the capital as Princess Iris’s “Big Brother”. Unfortunately, this ends with him stuck at the residence of Alderp, a lord who has plenty of reason to hate his guts. Things get even more complicated when he finally catches the thief, and it turns out that it’s someone he knows.
This week’s episode of KonoSuba is one of the funniest episodes in the season so far, as it showcases the main cast at their absolute best. We also get to see a few side characters we haven’t seen much of in a while, and it’s possible that they’ll play quite a big part in the arc to come.
Arriving At Alderp’s Mansion
Kazuma begrudgingly starts his stay at Alderp’s mansion, though neither him nor the lord are all that excited about it. Alderp himself is excited to see Darkness in his residence, but the rest of her party quickly begin to wear at his patience. While exploring the mansion, Kazuma encounters Alderp preparing a magic mirror in a small room, and quickly discovers that he plans to use it to peep on Darkness while bathing. Though he puts on a display of disgust, it’s soon clear that Kazuma wants to use it too, but their perverted goals are subverted when Darkness comes by and smashes the mirror herself.
As time passes by at Alderp’s mansion, Kazuma, Aqua, and Megumin take full advantage of his hospitality. Aqua spends her days drinking booze, while Megumin casts Explosion all around the capital on a daily basis. Kazuma isn’t blameless either, as he has the maids fulfill his every whim in need. Though he tries to maintain a polite demeanor, a week of this ultimately pushes Alderp to his limit, and Darkness, sensing his fury, immediately promises that they will leave as soon as possible.
The Thief’s Identity
On their last night at Aldarp’s mansion, Kazuma goes to get a late night snack when he hears someone moving about secretly. He discovers a thief sneaking about, and quickly pounces on her in an attempt to capture her. After a short struggle, Kazuma realizes that the thief is in fact Chris, Darkness’s adventurer friend. Chris attempts to explain why she is doing all this, but Kazuma refuses to listen, as he believes it will only get him in trouble. He gets Chris to leave, but not before getting her to bind him so that it looks like he tried to stop her. He is soon discovered by the other members of his party, and they take advantage of his restrained state to apologize for various misdeeds and take vengeance over all the trouble he’s caused them.
In the end, Kazuma’s party report their failure to catch the thief to the royal palace. Though Princess Iris takes mercy on Kazuma by framing his act as having prevented the thief from stealing anything rather than him failing to bring in the thief, Kazuma is nevertheless forced to leave the castle. While shopping for souvenirs in the capital before leaving, Aqua and Kazuma bump into Kyoya Mitsurugi, another reincarnated adventurer from Japan. Mitsurugi attempts to give Aqua a ring as a sort of romantic gesture, but her inability to remember him and the ring being too small for her finger ends up ruining his attempt.
Chris’s Mission
At night, Chris visits Kazuma once again. She attempts to explain the reason behind her heists, but once again Kazuma refuses to listen. Nevertheless, Chris stubbornly resists, and ultimately Kazuma relents. Chris tells Kazuma about the Divine Treasures, strange mystical artifacts with incredible powers wielded by people with strange names. Kazuma quickly realizes that the “Divine Treasures” in question are in fact the cheat items Aqua gave to the reincarnated Japanese people, and when Chris mentions the ability to create great wealth, he soon realizes that she was the one who stole the mallet he found in episode one.
Chris insists that the Treasures are dangerous, and asks Kazuma to help her find a possible Divine Treasure hidden below the castle. However, Kazuma refuses to help her and chases her out, though she swears to keep trying to enlist his help. He goes to sleep once more, but can’t due to the alarms signaling an attack from the Devil King’s Army. Darkness attempts to rouse Kazuma out of bed, but Kazuma refuses to leave. As Darkness goes to get Aqua and Megumin, Kazuma suddenly reconsiders once he realizes that if he helps defend against the Devil King’s Army, he might be able to find some way to stay at the castle once more.
