Fans are celebrating Sailor Moon’s Sailor Jupiter’s birthday this December with breathtaking fan art.
Manga_Nashi, a traditional artist and mangaka of Sometimes She’s the Light, posted a beautiful watercolor painting of Makoto Kino as Sailor Jupiter on Twitter. Adorning the Sailor Senshi’s long brown hair are dazzling pink roses to match her earrings. The artist added a ton of sparkle and shimmer in Makoto’s hair accessory, tiara and large green eyes, which many fans complimented.
Who is Sailor Jupiter?
Makoto is one of the strongest and tallest Sailor Soldiers and the third Soldier the main character, Usagi Tsukino, discovered. Makoto became an orphan at a young age when her parents died in a plane crash, resulting in her having to grow up very quickly and learn how to take care of herself. Although many people’s first impression of her is that she is a delinquent, Makoto is actually a very gentle and caring person who dreams about getting married and owning a cake and flower shop one day. As Sailor Jupiter, Makoto wears a sailor suit with a green skirt, boots and collar with a pink bow at the front. While Makoto’s dominant element is wood, she usually uses her secondary power, lightning, to attack during fights.
In Sailor Moon creator Naoko Takeuchi’s initial character concepts, Makoto was originally named Mamoru Chino before she changed her name. She was initially conceived to be a smoker and the leader of a female gang. Aside from the Sailor Moon series, Makoto has her own manga story called The Melancholy of Mako-chan.
Takeuchi wrote a one-shot called Codename: Sailor V in August 1991 about a 13-year-old girl named Minako Aino who can transform into the Soldier of Justice, Sailor V, to protect the Earth. The one-shot eventually acted as the basis for the shojo sequel Sailor Moon, translated initially as Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, which is the beloved series many fans know today. Sailor Moon began its serialization in Nakayoshi in December 1991 and starred middle school student Usagi Tsukino who befriends a talking black cat named Luna who gives her a magical brooch to transform into Sailor Moon. Usagi finds and awakens the rest of the Sailor Guardians, including Minako, and the story follows the girls as they fight evil. Toei Animation adapted the manga into a 200-episode series from 1992 to 1997. A reboot called Sailor Moon Crystal, which follows the manga more closely, began production in 2014 before ending in 2016. A two-part animated action film based on the “Dream” arc of the manga called Sailor Moon Eternal released in 2021, and a two-part sequel, Sailor Moon Cosmos, will release sometime in 2023.
