An Adventure Time storyboard supervisor shows how Makima is Chainsaw Man’s version of Princess Bubblegum.
Ian Jones-Quartey, an American animator who has supervised and revised the storyboards for Adventure Time, illustrated Makima with Princess Bubblegum-level pink hair. With one leg crossed over the other and metal chain in hand, Makima sits on Finn who is acting as her makeshift chair. “I heard the creator of [Chainsaw Man] is an Adventure Time fan,” Jones-Quartey writes in his caption. “And It just fits so well.” In a previous interview, Tatsuki Fujimoto, the mangaka of Chainsaw Man, has said he often takes inspiration from things he has watched and loved. One of those series happens to be Adventure Time.
Many have found the similarities between Makima, the Head of the Tokyo Special Division 4, and Princess Bubblegum, the sentient piece of gum who rules over Candy Kingdom, to be eerily uncanny as both Finn and Denji harbor one-sided romantic feelings for these two women in their respective series. Both Princess Bubblegum and Makima are older women incredibly proficient at manipulating people to get what they want and do not see Finn and Denji as real people.
The story of Chainsaw Man revolves around 16-year-old Denji who spends most of his days devil hunting with his best friend Pochita to clear off his dead father’s debt. When the yakuza kill the two, Pochita sacrifices himself and becomes Denji’s heart, thus turning him into the Chainsaw Man.
The Hit Series, Adventure Time
Created by Pendleton Ward with Larry Leichliter as director, Adventure Time aired on Cartoon Network on April 5, 2010, and ran for 10 seasons before concluding on Sept. 3, 2018. The series follows Finn the Human and his adoptive brother Jake the Dog who has the ability to change his shape and size. Set in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo, the two best friends go on a string of different adventures and meet numerous characters like Princess Bubblegum, the Ice King, Marceline the Vampire Queen and BMO.
Adventure Time has garnered critical acclaim from critics for its creativity and for addressing complex topics such as mental illness in a mature and sophisticated manner. The series has received nominations and awards including the BAFTA awards for two consecutive years and the Annie Award for Best Animated TV/Broadcast Production for Children’s Audience.
Adventure Time is available to stream on HBO Max or Hulu. Chainsaw Man is currently available on Crunchyroll.
