SpongeBob and Chainsaw Man Collide in Comical Fan-Made Crossover Video

It turns out Chainsaw Man and SpongeBob SquarePants have more in common than anyone realized.

A creative fan on YouTube with the username Looer has recreated a Chainsaw Man scene using the characters from SpongeBob SquarePants. Taking the place of Denji is the main character himself, SpongeBob, which is fitting as both characters wear a white button-up with a tie. The animator took care to add Denji details, such as his sharp teeth and eyes, that suit the style of Chainsaw Man more. Inserted right between his eyes is a chainsaw to depict Gary, the chainsaw snail. Squidward isn’t ordinarily much of a looker in the cartoon, but SquidAki looks surprisingly dashing in the fan video. Portraying Makima is Sandy Cheeks, who looks much more threatening without her diving suit and with Makima’s iconic chilling red-ringed eyes.

The Animator’s Attention to Detail

The animator added numerous little details to make the scene feel like it could’ve fit in at Bikini Bottom, such as replacing the shower head with that of a conch shell, changing the police and detectives into the fish side characters from SpongeBob SquarePants, and even the iconic Krabby Patty makes an appearance. In the anime, the devil had consumed a bird, but in the remake, a dead jellyfish lies motionless on the ground. If viewers look closely enough, they can also see several volumes of One Piece stacked on top of each other in the room. One noticeable absence was Patrick, but some fans reasoned it would make sense that he would play Power.

More ChainBob SquareMan may be coming to fans’ way later, as Looer has written that they hope to do “the opening of chainsaw man or some fight scene.” Looer’s first SpongeBob SquarePants and anime crossover was in September 2017, when they created an anime version of what a SpongeBob SquarePants ending would look like. They have since continued mashing up the long-standing series with other popular anime such as Darling in the Franxx, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and The Seven Deadly Sins. According to a reply to a viewer’s comment, Looer also plans on creating a SpongeBob version of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’s opening.

When Chainsaw Man, written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto, debuted in Weekly Shōnen Jump in December 2018, many were taken aback by how un-shonen-like the series was. The story is unapologetically graphic in its depiction of violence, gore and sexual themes and content. Chainsaw Man also features a rather unconventional protagonist in Denji, a 16-year-old impoverished boy who has nothing except an enormous debt and a loyal chainsaw devil dog named Pochita. His life changes when the yakuza betray and kill him and Pochita sacrifices himself to save Denji, thus turning him into the Chainsaw Man. With his life a lot better than before, Denji sets his sights on achieving his next goal: touching some boobs.

All episodes of Chainsaw Man are streamable on Crunchyroll.
