My Hero Academia Fans Angered By the Sky in Dark Deku’s Anime Debut

Some My Hero Academia fans are metaphorically shaking their fist at the bright blue sky in the episode introducing Dark Deku.

At the end of Season 6, Episode 18, “Izuku Midoriya and Tomura Shigaraki,” Deku decides to leave U.A. Knowing that All for One and Shigaraki are targeting him, Deku can’t allow his presence to endanger those he loves, so he sets off alone. The final shot of the episode displays Deku standing atop a building, observing the scene of several collapsed buildings below him. His hero costume, now with the addition of Gran Torino’s cape, is frayed and ragged to reflect where Deku is at now in his resolve as a hero. However, some fans have issues with the background, as it depicts a bright blue sky with floating clouds. Many believe that it does not match the atmosphere of the aftermath of the fight between the villains and heroes and the upcoming “Black Hero” arc.

Fans Explain What the Color of the Sky Means

Manga readers argued that Studio Bones had ensured the animation was faithful to the source material, as in Chapter 306, “The Final Act Begins,” the sky appears clear. Many also noted that the blue skies symbolize Deku’s emotional state. @/The_Mags_Pie wrote, “Deku is still our Deku, there’s hope. He’s trying. But the more he fights, the darker the sky gets, the more he pushes people away until it rains and he accepts help. [Kōhei] Horikoshi knows what he’s doing.”

While other fans agreed that the blue skies were the correct choice, some criticized the one-dimensionality of the color. One commenter believed the ending scene lacked “any intensity and impact” due to how simplistic the blue sky looked. According to @/Geeteetons, “It looks like someone just grabbed the fill on paint and covered everything blue. No tones, you can’t even tell where light comes from. It’s really bad to me at least.”

Produced by Studio Bones, Season 6 of My Hero Academia premiered in October 2022 for two consecutive cours at 25 episodes. The season covered the “Paranormal Liberation War” arc earlier, which pitted the heroes against the Paranormal Liberation Front, led by Shigaraki. The fight left numerous casualties, with many heroes doubting their purpose as heroes and some even retiring. Dabi’s reveal of his family origins has also shaken society’s trust in the heroes. With Shigaraki and All for One growing in strength and the foundation of the hero society crumbling every second, Deku knows he has to find some way to use One for All to save everyone.

The “Black Hero” arc begins on Feb. 11, where it will stream on Crunchyroll. The manga will resume updating on Feb. 20
