The newly-christened DC Studios is currently undergoing a seismic shift as new chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran map out their multi-year plan for the on-screen DC Universe. However, the many changes the two are reportedly making, combined with an alleged lack of communication, seems to be causing some unrest among DC-connected creatives.

Per Deadline, talent reps and content creators are apparently being kept in the dark regarding the future of DC as Gunn and Safran draw up their plans. More specifically, creatives currently seem to be unaware of the fate of their in-the-works projects going forward. “This is creating a riot,” one anonymous content maker said of the situation. “And it’s a horrible optic. This business is based on relationships.”

According to a recent piece published by The Hollywood Reporter, Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins will not be directing a third installment in the series, a sequel to Man of Steel is currently up in the air — as is Henry Cavill’s return as Superman in general — and a sequel to Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam is highly “unlikely.” There are also murmurs that Arthur Curry/Aquaman actor Jason Momoa could potentially retire from the role following Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom before re-joining the DCU as Lobo.

The Hierarchy of Power in the DC Universe Has Changed

Gunn, who was tapped to lead DC Studios alongside Safran in October, has acknowledged that the DCU is undergoing a transition that won’t necessarily make everyone happy. “But, in the end, the drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities [and] the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far [and] to help rectify what has not,” he said. Gunn also claimed that while certain aspects of THR’s story are true, some are only half true and some aren’t true at all. He and Safran are expected to present their proposed “DC Universe Bible” to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav next week.

While many perceive Gunn and Safran to be pressing the reset button on the DC Universe, so to speak, numerous projects green-lit under the previous regime are still slated to go ahead as planned. 2023 alone will see the theatrical release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and the aforementioned Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Beyond that, however, the future of DC is still being decided.
