Junji Ito, author and artist of Japanese horror stories, showed off a creepy-looking piece of merchandise based on the horror manga Tomie.
DJ and body art artist Doooo uploaded footage of Ito holding the “human flesh item” from their collaboration. The cubical object is modeled after Tomie Kawakami from the 1997 horror manga Tomie. It features Tomie’s left eye and mole inside a flesh-like square. The concept comes from Tomie’s body being hacked to bits by an unknown killer in her self-titled story. Not only can the Tomie flesh cube be used like a die, but it also blinks whenever the lower corners of the square are rubbed. On Twitter, Ito thanked Doooo for the time they spent together.
Creepy Tomie Merchandise
In addition to the Tomie flesh cube, Doooo also produced a coin purse that’s shaped like the lower portion of a woman’s face. The purse is detailed with realistic-looking human lips and will open up like one to store the owner’s pocket change. It also features a finger stamp. These cursed items were previously available exclusively at Tsutaya Books, which is located in the Shibuya-ku region in Tokyo, Japan. They were priced between 33,000 and 660,000 yen, which roughly translates to $240 to $4,819. The promotion ran from Dec. 26 to Jan. 16, coinciding with the Netflix Jan. release of Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre.
Tomie was published by the Japanese manga magazine Monthly Halloween from 1987 to 2000. In the series, Tomie would seduce her victims with beauty and psychological manipulation. Leaving them completely unaware of the true horrors that await them until it’s too late. Despite her normal appearance, Tomie is a supernatural entity that cannot be killed. Allowing her to continue spreading her evil influence to a new cast of characters. Although a full-fledged anime series has yet to be made, there have been several live-action Tomie movies made in Japan from 1998 to 2011. A Tomie story was adapted into animation in the Netflix original series Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre.
Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre is available to stream worldwide on Netflix. A four-episode anime adaption of Ito’s Uzumaki is in the works for Adult Swim’s Toonami block on Cartoon Network. It is published in English by Viz Media.
