What Is The Eminence in Shadow About?
The Eminence in Shadow follows the story of a boy living in modern-day Japan who desires to become a mastermind that exerts power from the shadows. Unfortunately, he gets hit by a truck during his training and dies. Later, he finds himself reborn in a fantasy world as Cid Kagenou, where he does his best to maintain a mediocre life and appearance so as not to stand out, allowing him to follow his dreams of manipulating things from the shadows. During his adventures, he encounters an elven girl named Alpha, infected by an unknown and mysterious disease, and cures her. Cid tells Alpha that a secret cult runs the world and that only his organization, Shadow Garden, can stop them. Although Cid thinks he made the story up, Alpha and future recruits don’t realize they are involved in a real power struggle in the battle against the Cult of Diablos.
The Eminence in Shadow initially announced its anime adaptation in February 2021. Nexus Co., Ltd. (Wakaba Girl, Darwin’s Game) produced the 20-episode TV anime, with director Kazuya Nakanishi (Darwin’s Game) helming the project. Kanichi Katou (Black Clover) provided the script, while Makoto Iino (Demon Lord, Retry!) worked on character designs and Kenichiro Suehiro (Cell’s at Work!, Shadows House, Undead Unluck) composed the music. Season 1 aired from Oct. 5, 2022, until Feb. 15, 2023. Sentai Filmworks licensed the series for its North American release, while anime streamer HIDIVE released it.
The Eminence in Shadow, also known as Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!, began as a webnovel series written by Daisuke Aizawa, serialized on the publishing website Shōsetsuka ni Narō. Enterbrain acquired the rights to publish the light novel in 2018, and Tōzai provided the illustrations. Not long after it debuted as a light novel, The Eminence in Shadow received a manga adaptation serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s Comp Ace magazine, featuring art by Anri Sakano. Yen Press holds the licensing rights for distributing both the light novel and manga in North America.
The Eminence in Shadow’s first season is available to stream on HIDIVE, while Yen Press publishes its manga.
