Alice in Borderland’s Live-Action Karube Actor Announces His Marriage

Keita Machida, who portrays Karube in the live-action adaptation of Alice in Borderland, has announced he has tied the knot.

According to EXILE TRIBE’s notice on Dec. 25, Machida revealed he has married South Korean actress Hyunri. The two had co-starred in the 2017 film End of the World and worked together again in the 2018 NHK drama Joshi-teki Seikatsu. They submitted their marriage registration after dating for five years. In the note, Machida wrote, “From now on, we will work together to build a better future, and to become a better person and actor.”

Machida Is Best Known for Alice in Borderland

Machida’s first acting role was in the 2011 live-action adaptation of the boxing manga Rokudenashi Blues. The year after, he acted in 2012 Double Sky!. Since then, he has played Soju Kugayama in L-DK: Two Loves, Under One Roof, Kyosuke Sakuma in 2020’s romance drama Your Eyes Tell and Yuichi Kurosawa in the Boys Love film Cherry Magic! the Movie. He also played Noboru Harada in the High&Low movie franchise. However, the work that garnered him international recognition was the 2020 Netflix adaptation of Haro Aso’s survival death games series Alice in Borderland.

Machida plays Daikichi Karube, a bartender and best friend of protagonist Ryōhei Arisu, played by Kento Yamazaki. He, Arisu and their other best friend, Chōta Segawa, portrayed by Yūki Morinaga, suddenly find themselves transported to an abandoned version of Tokyo, called the Borderlands after they witness a fireworks display. There, they find themselves forced to participate in dangerous games where each game’s difficulty and type varies depending on the playing card — games that test one’s strength, ability to work as a team, wits and psychological tenacity. If they win, they extend their visas and live to play another day. If they lose, a laser comes down from the sky and kills them.

Season 1 premiered on Dec. 10, 2020, and received positive reviews from critics who praised the acting performances from Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya, who portrays Yuzuha Usagi, a young woman who excels at mountain climbing and recently lost her father. Directed by Shinsuke Sato and music composed by Yutaka Yamada, who worked on 2018’s live-action adaptation of Bleach and 2019’s live-action adaptation of Kingdom, Alice in Borderland also garnered praise for its cinematography, pacing and visuals. A second season premiered on Dec. 22, 2022, and contains eight episodes, with Machida reprising his role as Karube.

Season 2 of Alice in Borderland is currently streaming on Netflix.
