Chainsaw Man’s Tatsuki Fujimoto seems to love tearing his characters apart from their furry best friends.
First, it was Denji and Pochita, then Power and Meowy and now Asa and her cat Crambon have become the latest victims in Chainsaw Man’s recent chapter, “Hors D’oeuvre.” In a previous chapter, Asa’s mother sacrificed herself to save her daughter after Asa went back to rescue their cat from getting eaten by a devil. Asa’s choice ultimately resulted in her mother’s death, a guilt she still carries in her heart, but, as outlined by Chainsaw Man fan KaiyoBreeze, there’s another, much heavier reason why she feels so guilty.
Asa’s Unlucky Cat on Chainsaw Man
Chapter 123 reveals that Asa and her cat had been sent to an orphanage, joining other children who had lost their families due to the devils. After much cajoling, the caretaker managed to convince Asa to let her take her cat away, telling her it would “be happier living at my friend’s house, with other cats.” It turned out to be a lie as one of the orphans tells her that she saw Crambon at the bottom of the river. When Asa confronts the caretaker, the woman justifies her cruelty by saying it would be “unfair” if Asa still had family while everyone else didn’t. In other words, Asa’s mother essentially died for nothing.
Asa Mitaka, the new protagonist introduced at the start of Chainsaw Man’s Part 2, has had no shortage of misfortune in her life. From her accidental murder of the class devil chicken to playing host to a revenge-hungry War Devil, Asa would do anything for her life to return to normal once again. Unfortunately, according to the War Devil Yoru, the devil will grant Asa’s wish — as long as she’s able to beat Chainsaw Man.
Chainsaw Man’s Manga Success
Part 2 of Fujimoto’s hit manga series Chainsaw Man began in Shōnen Jump+ in July 2022 after its first arc finished in Weekly Shōnen Jump in December 2020. The manga has sold over 23 million copies as of January 2023 and has numerous accolades to its name including Best Manga in the Harvey Awards for two consecutive years. The series received an anime adaptation, produced by MAPPA, in October 2022 where it aired for 12 episodes. A second season has not yet been confirmed, despite the manga’s huge popularity.
Chainsaw Man’s next chapter comes out on March 28 and fans can read it through Viz Media or Manga Plus.
