Studio Ghibli may be taking a trip to a galaxy far, far away.
The beloved animation house posted a brief video to its Twitter page that simply features its logo, which is preceded by the introduction Lucasfilm attaches to its projects. While it’s currently not confirmed that Studio Ghibli is working on Star Wars project, many fans have taken the post to mean that a collaboration is officially underway. At the time of writing, virtually nothing is known about the production.
Given the scarce details, fans have taken to speculating about the project in question. Some are insisting the studios are working on an animated movie set within the expansive Star Wars universe in Ghibli’s signature art style. Others have noted that Lucasfilm owns the rights to several other properties, most notably Indiana Jones and Willow, both of which are set to make a return in 2023. More information on the collaboration will likely be shared in the coming months.
What About Star Wars: Visions?
The Star Wars franchise is no stranger to anime adaptations as George Lucas’ sci-fi world was reimagined through the lens of the Japanese style in the Disney+ series Star Wars: Visions. The anthology show brought together several anime studios to tell original, non-canon stories that leaned into the franchise’s unique aesthetic and characters. Kamikaze Douga, Studio Colorido, Geno Studio and Trigger were among some of the contributors reinterpreting the galaxy far, far away. Some enthusiasts believe Studio Ghibli’s recent announcement is a tease regarding its potential participation in Star Wars: Visions Season 2.
Star Wars: Visions earned generally favorable reviews from fans and critics alike, many of whom pointed out the effort that went into imagining the storied franchise in an entirely fresh light. Despite the praise, some criticized the varying tones and styles that resulted in a show that struggled to maintain a cohesive core.
As for Star Wars: Visions Season 2, Lucasfilm has played its cards close to the chest. Showrunner James Waugh confirmed that the next batch of episodes will comprise more than anime, hinting that Western animation will also be showcased. “We really wanted it to be, in a way, a ‘sub-brand’ that allowed for different creators to come celebrate Star Wars from their own unique cultural perspective,” Waugh said.
The Studio Ghibli/Star Wars project does not yet have a release date.
