Deadpool 3 star Ryan Reynolds revealed that he was just as excited as the fans to announce Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine.

Speaking to Forbes, Reynolds shared his excitement about the Merc with the Mouth finally crossing paths with the iconic member of the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I couldn’t be more excited,” he said. “I mean, especially to do it this way. Ultimately, I get to work with some of my closest friends in the world and that doesn’t happen every day working in this business.” Reynolds also explained that keeping the secret of Jackman’s return left him physically on edge.

“I’m thrilled and I’ve been sitting on those couple of teasers for a few weeks now,” he continued. “It’s one of those moments where you’re hitting send or a tweet or a post — your hand is shaking when you’re messing with the zeitgeist in a way like that. It’s been amazing. I feel the same way that the fans do, though. I feel as excited that this character is coming back for another ride, particularly in this context. I think it’s something that people have wanted for a long time, to get this pairing up on the big screen, and that’s what we aim to do.”

Wolverine’s Return

Jackman’s Wolverine and Reynolds’s Deadpool first encountered one another in Fox’s critically panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009, which saw the foul-mouthed mutant assassin not only without his signature costume but removed his mouth entirely in the third act. In 2021, Reynolds revealed that prior to Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox, Deadpool 3 would have been a road trip movie starring Deadpool and Jackman’s Wolverine. At the moment, plot details surrounding the Deadpool threequel remain tightly under wraps.

Reynolds and Jackman would frequently troll each other on social media about a potential team-up following the releases of Logan in 2017 and Deadpool 2 in 2018. Prior to Logan, Jackman first portrayed Wolverine in 2000’s X-Men, and went on to play the character in X2 (2003), X-Men: Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and The Wolverine (2013).

In September 2022, Reynolds and Jackman officially announced that Wolverine would be returning for Deadpool’s Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. When 2017’s Logan saw the demise of Jackman’s titular X-Men, it was assumed this would be the actor’s final appearance as the hero. However, Reynolds has stated that Deadpool 3 will not interfere with Logan’s continuity. “Logan takes place in 2029,” Reynolds said. “Totally separate thing. Logan died in Logan. Not touching that.”

Directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool 3 hits theaters on Sept. 6, 2024.
