The new poster for Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen is looking mighty familiar for some Yuri!!! on Ice fans.
Yuri!!! on Ice has been quiet for three years, ever since the production team released a note to reassure fans the animated film Ice Adolescence was still, indeed, in the works. It’s unclear if or when Yuri!!! on Ice fans will see their favorite series again, but perhaps Jujutsu Kaisen can fill in the hole in fans’ hearts for now. Fans have noticed some similarities between the poster for the newly-released visual for Jujutsu Kaisen’s second season and Yuri!!! on Ice posters, in particular, the color schemes and poses. @/goatgumi uploaded the two posters side by side.
Fans Joke Jujutsu Kaisen is the New Yuri!!! on Ice
One Twitter user jokingly but bitterly wrote, “‘Is this the new [Yuri!!! on Ice].” Another pointed out that Jujutsu Kaisen might be Ice Adolescence in disguise, writing, “Maybe [Jujutsu Kaisen] is the infamous Yuri on Ice movie they promised us long time ago.” Yet another fan jokingly wrote, “They said there can only [be] ONE homoromantic plot this year,” evidently referring to how many in the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom often ship Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto given their long and angst-filled history together. A few Twitter users noted how Gojo and Victor Nikiforov from Yuri!!! on Ice looked similar to each other, with one going as far as to create a Venn diagram between the two, writing “White-haired, blue-eyed gays” in the middle.
Both productions hail from MAPPA, which has become one of the biggest names in the animation industry, Jujutsu Kaisen has seen huge success with its anime adaptations. The first season, directed by Sunghoo Park, premiered in October 2020 and garnered praise for its directorial choices in creating a cohesive storyline. The first season won numerous awards, including Anime of the Year at the 2021 Crunchyroll Awards and Animation of the Year (Television) at the 2022 Tokyo Anime Award Festival. Park went on to direct the prequel film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, where it similarly saw huge success, becoming the highest-earning film at the Japanese box office in 2021. Shōta Goshozono, who has directed a few episodes from Season 1, will replace Park as the director for Season 2. The second season will adapt the “Kaigyoku/Gyokusetsu” and “Shibuya Incident” arcs.
Many fans argue that Yuri!!! on Ice was the series that kickstarted MAPPA’s success and acclaim as an animation studio. The series premiered in October 2016 and received praise for its depiction of a same-sex relationship between the two main characters while staying firmly within its sports anime genre. The series became the most-tweeted anime of the season when it aired. Yuri!!! on Ice continues to be extremely popular, despite being almost seven years old, as shown in a poll where voters pick their favorite MAPPA production. Against over 30 other series, including Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan, Yuri!!! on Ice won the poll in a landslide victory.
Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen airs on July 6. There is no information regarding Ice Adolescence’s premiere date.
