One Piece Creator Reveals Health Issues Due to Ongoing Sleep Deprivation

The legendary author of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda, has revealed his struggles with sleep deprivation and the resulting health issues.

A post from the Facebook group, Daily Dose of Anime, delivered an update on the health of One Piece’s creator. The post stated that the iconic artist has an ongoing sleep deprivation problem, only sleeping three hours daily. It further clarified that his routine sees him go to bed at 9 am and wake at noon. The report also discussed the sleep schedule of his assistants, marking it as 5 am to noon.

Oda’s Many Sacrifices for One Piece

This instance is not the only detrimental impact that the production of One Piece has had on Oda, as the report also discussed his ongoing physical issues. It stated that he often skips meals in order to focus on producing the long-running series. In addition, he suffers from moderate diabetes and gout due to his time spent sitting in a chair illustrating. Oda has been working on One Piece since 1997, with the series still active within Weekly Shōnen Jump.

The production of manga has previously caused health struggles for multiple artists. Hunter x Hunter has gone through famous development troubles thanks to the creator’s ongoing back problems, seeing many long-term delays. Additionally, the lesser-known Teppu series, a manga based on women’s mixed martial arts, was forced to finish prematurely, rushing its final arc after a long hiatus thanks to the author’s battles with their health. Finally, the World Trigger manga saw multiple breaks last year, thanks again to the poor physical health of the author.

Fans Express Care for One Piece’s Creator

Comments on the post were full of support for Oda, with many discussing his impact on their lives and their hopes that he gets better soon. However, some users also discussed their fear for him, worrying that he might pass before getting the chance to finish the series. This fate befell the dark fantasy series Berserk, as the author, Kentaro Miura, tragically passed away in 2021.

One Piece is a major pillar of the manga/anime community, having lasted for decades, with Oda taking regular health breaks throughout. The latest chapter, 1079 – “The Emperor’s Crew, The Red-Haired Pirates,” was released on March 26, 2023. Chapter 1080 has an expected release date of April 9, giving Oda a week to take a short break. Additionally, the anime adaptation recently went through a hiatus, which ended on March 19 with the arrival of episode 1054.
