Play It Cool, Guys Live-Action Series Adds NCT 127’s Yuta, JO1’s Takumi Kawanishi

Play It Cool, Guys has found their socially awkward cool guys for its live-action adaptation.

As per Anime Corner, the official Twitter account for Play It Cool, Guys has unveiled the cast list for the four main characters for the live-action adaptation, including two faces who might be familiar to K-Pop and J-Pop fans. Taking on the role of Shun Futami is Maito Fujioka (Kamen Rider: Beyond Generations and Samurai Swordfish). Dori Sakurada (Alice in Borderland and The Prince of Tennis musicals) portrays Takayuki Mima. Playing Hayate Ichikura will be K-Pop group NCT 127’s Yuta Nakamoto. J-Pop group JO1’s Takumi Kawanishi will round out the cast as Soma Shiki. The live-action adaptation premieres on April 14.

Play It Cool, Guys will be Nakamoto and Kawanishi’s acting debut. The series will have three directors overseeing the adaptation: Hiroaki Yuasa (Watanuki-san Chi no), Yuka Eda and Akina Yanagi. Hiroyuki Komine will write the screenplay.

How Play It Cool, Guys Got Its Start

Based on the web manga series created by Kokone Nata, Play It Cool, Guys began as a series of illustrations before moving to Pixiv website for serialization in February 2019. The series currently comprises five tankōbon volumes as of October 2022. Play It Cool, Guys received an anime adaptation in October 2022, produced by Pierrot (Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War and Tokyo Ghoul). Chiaki Kobayashi (SK8 the Infinity and Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku) voices Hayate in the anime, while Koki Uchiyama (Yuri!!! on Ice and My Hero Academia) voices Shun. Yūichirō Umehara (I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss and Romantic Killer) voices Takayuki and Shōya Chiba (86-Eighty-Six and Bungo Stray Dogs) portrays Soma. Each episode runs for approximately 15 minutes and the four voice actors performed the ending theme songs as a unit called PICG.

Play It Cool, Guys follows four guys who exude a cool and cold aura that makes them seem intimidating. However, these four guys aren’t as cool as they seem once people look past that. In fact, they’re actually more dorky, awkward and clumsy than they are suave, and this combination makes them endearing to watch.

Play It Cool, Guys is currently streaming on Crunchyroll. Episode 20 “Tomodachi,” airs on March 7. Fans can catch the live-action adaptation on April 14.
