Most fans are thrilled when they’re acknowledged by the artist of their favorite manga series, but the Vinland Saga manga artist recognizes his fans by making their days — and their birthdays — that much more special with this simple act.
A fan (RoseRoziee) replied to a tweet from Makoto Yukimura, the writer and illustrator of Vinland Saga, and thanked him for creating the hard science-fiction series Planetes and Vinland Saga. She asked Yukimura if Hild, a hunter from Norway, had a birthday. The mangaka thanked the fan for reading and enjoying his series and asked the fan back what her birthday was. After the fan replied with her birthday, Yukimura thereby declared the fan’s birthday, Nov. 23, to be Hild’s birthday.
The Joy of Sharing A Birthday With Your Bias Character
The fan was beyond excited and pinned a screenshot of the conversation to their account, tweeting, “I am going to be so normal about this for the rest of time.” This isn’t the first time Yukimura has given his characters fans’ birthdays. On July 12, another fan told the mangaka that it was their birthday and wanted to know what Canute’s birthday was. While Yukimura wished the fan a happy birthday, he disclosed that the king of Denmark was born on that day. In reply to RoseRoziee’s tweet, the fan said they had only asked on their birthday because they believed Yukimura would “be more likely to reply to [them].”
Vinland Saga is a historical epic that follows a young warrior named Thorfinn seeking to avenge the death of his father by killing his father’s murderer, Askeladd, in a duel. However, he has to earn the right to fight Askeladd by completing various tasks for him, such as killing enemy generals. The series has been lauded for Thorfinn’s complex character development and journey as he changes from a young warrior corrupted by hatred to a man seeking peace. Vinland Saga has over 7 million copies as of August 2022.
In 2019, Wit Studio produced the first season of Vinland Saga, consisting of 24 episodes. The adaptation is critically-acclaimed, with many citing the first season as the best anime of the year. In an interview, Yukimura revealed that he thought the anime was better than the manga as he believed the director, Shūhei Yabuta, and screenwriters, Hiroshi Seko and Kenta Ihara, understood the manga better than him. He also appreciated how the animation team smoothed out pacing issues in the original work.
MAPPA is taking over as the studio for the second season and released a trailer, announcing that Season 2 will premiere on Jan. 9, 2023. The second season will stream on Crunchyroll, Netflix and other unannounced platforms.
