New streaming and premiere details have dropped for the highly-anticipated second season of Vinland Saga.
As detailed on Anime News Network, Season 2 will premiere in 2023 on Jan. 9 and be available on both Crunchyroll and Netflix for viewers outside Japan. @Animetv_jp also shared the news on their Twitter account along with the new Season 2 trailer. This trailer shows a more world-weary Thorfinn alongside a new character named Einar, who attempts to befriend him. Multiple blood-filled action scenes set the tone for what will likely be an intense follow-up season. The trailer also features Season 2’s new opening theme song, “River,” performed by Anonymouz.
Based on Makoto Yukimura’s historical-adventure manga of the same name, Season 1 of Vinland Saga ran for 24 episodes from July to December 2019. Set in 11th Century England, its story revolves around a Viking named Thorfinn who embarks on a quest for revenge when Askeladd, a ruthless mercenary leader, kills his father. Thorfinn joins the leader’s group in order to challenge him to a duel, but his quest becomes more complicated when he gets involved in the ongoing war for England’s crown. Season 2 will adapt the manga’s Slave Arc, which starts when Thorfinn is sold into the Scandinavian Slave Trade as punishment for attacking a Danish Prince named Canute, who prevents him from finishing off Askeladd.
