Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke Merch Modeled by Hayao Miyazaki’s Son

Hayao Miyazaki’s son, Goro, promoted Ghibli Park’s upcoming merchandise by modeling it himself.

As detailed on NextShark, Ghibli Park is introducing a new necklace and yukata-kimono inspired by the films, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, respectively. Goro Miyazaki, who serves as the creative head for the park’s planning department, modeled these items on Ghibli Park’s official Twitter page. Ghibli Park has not yet announced prices for these items, or when they will be released.

The yukata kimono is decorated with images of the iconic spirit, No-Face, as well as the Kanji symbol for “Bathhouse.” In Spirited Away, the spirits who come to the bathhouse to relax wear the same type of yukata. The bone necklace is a replica of the one that San wears in Princess Mononoke.

Studio Ghibli and the Miyazaki Legacy

Aside from his work with Ghibli Park, Goro Miyazaki has also directed several Studio Ghibli projects, including Tales of Earthsea in 2006, From Up On Poppy Hill in 2009, and the TV series, Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter, in 2014. Goro’s latest film, Earwig and the Witch, debuted on Japanese television in December 2020. Based on Diana Wynne Jones’ novel of the same name, this movie tells the story of an orphan girl named Earwig who is adopted by a mysterious witch. Once there, the witch turns Earwig into her magical assistant. Although often treated roughly, Earwig puts up with it in the hopes that she will get to learn magic as well. Although many critics bashed Earwig and the Witch, Hayao Miyazaki praised it, saying that it turned out to be “rather interesting.”

Ghibli Park officially opened its doors to the public in November 2022. Located within the grounds of Aichi Commemorative Park (or Moricoro Park) In Nagakute, Japan, Ghibli Park honors the studio’s legacy with attractions inspired by its most beloved films. The areas of the park currently open include “Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse,” “Hill of Youth” and “Dondoko Forest.” “Mononoke Village,” which features architectural replicas of Ashitaka’s home village and other areas, will open in Fall 2023. The park is also collaborating with Toyota to introduce rideable Catbuses to its growing collection of attractions.
