An intensely action-packed trailer for the webtoon adaptation Island just dropped, giving fans a glimpse of what to expect.
Posted by TVING (tvingdotcom), a South Korean online streaming service, released the trailer for the webcomic adaptation of Island. The trailer features many of Island’s fantastical elements, including monstrous demons, exorcisms and magical weapons. The main cast is also introduced in the short 15-second trailer, starring Kim Nam Gil as Pan, Lee Da Hee as Won Mi Ho and K-Pop band ASTRO’s Cha Eunwoo as Priest John. The live-action drama will premiere in December.
Taking place on Jeju Island, the fantasy action story of Island follows the three characters, Pan, Won Mi Ho and Priest John, as they fight to save the world against evil. Filming for the drama began in October 2021, and two months later, reports revealed that Lee had suffered an injury during filming. A mysterious teaser poster of Island was also released earlier. Shrouded in darkness, lit up only by the few ember sparks, a short sword called Geumgangjeo pierces the ground — the same weapon that Kim’s character brandishes in the trailer.
The Webcomic Centers Around Character Won Mi Ho
In the webcomic, Won Mi Ho, the heiress of the Daehan Group’s CEO, travels to Jeju Island hoping to begin a new life as a teacher, but as someone who has spent her life being spoiled and coddled, Jeju Island isn’t something she’s used to — especially when she suddenly finds herself the target of demons. She enlists the help of Pan to protect her, paying him an exorbitant amount of money for every demon that he slays, but after witnessing the violent and detached ferocity in his killings, she isn’t so sure if the man is her savior or someone more dangerous than the demons.
Based on the 1997 original work written by Youn In-wan and illustrated by Yang Kyung-il, Island received a reboot in 2016 with YLAB in charge of the production. With YLAB at the helm, Island is part of YLAB’s universe called ‘Super String,’ where various characters come together in one universe and occasionally appear as supporting characters in webcomics within that universe. According to YLAB’s website, Won Mi Ho created the Super String universe when she gathered all the heroes from the other webcomic stories to fight in a war against evil forces.
Fans can read all 71 completed chapters of Island on WEBTOON before the drama airs in December.
